Margaret Edwards (actress)

Margaret Edwards is described as having lived from 1877 to 1929 and been married to John Edwards.  Having watched Hypocrites (1915) where she plays The Naked Truth I just don't see her being 37/38 years of age.  This site https://forgottenstories.net/2013/05/#_ftnref1 has an interesting profile of her which suggests her age was about 20 during the filming of this movie which seems realistic.  The San Francisco Call's theater critic is quoted describing her physical virtues in 1911 when it is inferred she is 16 or so.  Her mother's name is listed as Edyth Edwards of Berkeley, CA who was a physical culture instructor for young ladies in local California schools beginning in 1905.  And there's pictures.  I've no clue concerning the site's sources.

Bottom line:  I believe the Margaret Edwards listed is not the Margaret Edwards of the filmography.

I'm referring to #1, the one listed as living 1877-1929.

Hi rpurdey -

We reviewed the birthdate sources for Ms. Edwards and found the following evidence to support the information we have listed on the site: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12163130/margaret_(daisy)-sinclair-edwards

If you have found further online evidence that contradicts the information we have listed, please let us know here and our staff will take another look.

This San Francisco Call story from June 11, 1911 describes Margaret as being 13 years old (maybe a little low ...) and gives her mother's name as Edyth Edwards.  So we are to believe that Margaret married a man with the same last name (not compelling) and was described in a newspaper story introducing her to the public (the story says she's been on stage for only a week) is describing a girl as being 13 when, in fact, she is 38.  I haven't yet read through the rest of the storys from the Call in 1911 about Margaret but there are quite a few.  It reminds me of the Agnes Franey case here on IMDB which I'll have to bring up.  I'll do additional research and see what comes up.

Above post I stated Margaret's alleged age as 38, I should have said 34.  Here's another Call's page from June 1, 1911.

In support of rpurdey's point, the following books identify Margaret Edwards in Hypocrites as being much younger than the 38 years old suggested by her IMDb entry:

Cinematic Perspectives on Digital Culture by Norman Taylor: "The Hypocrites depicted an allegorical figure of spiritual inspiration -- 'The Naked Truth' -- whose poses by a 16-year-old, Margaret Edwards, were superimposed ...."

Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood by Karen Ward Mahar: "... the figure of the Naked Truth was played by, in the words of one contemporary reviewer, 'a naked girl, about 18 years of age.' In fact, she was played by Margaret Edwards, winner of a gold medal as 'the most perfectly formed girl in the world."

Hi both,

Thank you for the additional details. Based on the above I think its safe to assume that this is a case of mistaken identity. I've removed the dates of birth, death and the spouse which is seemingly linked to this gravestone.

Regards,
Will

Will, I think this is typically the case where such a mistaken identity should be documented in the trivia section, to prevent later erroneous re-update.

The following article about & photo of Margaret Edwards confirms that she was born in 1897 or 1898.
From "Dance Review", February 1920, pp. 30 & 31.

Hello Ralph,

Thank you for adding this post!  I lived in Glendale, California, and lived next door to the incredible Margaret Edwards.  She was like a second mother to me, since my mom worked all the time and was as dear to me as she is to me today.  I am always looking for new information about her and appreciate your contribution very much!

Blessings to you,
