Lack of information on Actors' names in Movies

What happened to the full actor's name in the Movies.  I can remember when the full name was posted and now I'm lucky if there is the last name.  Example: in Earthquake (74) Charlton Heston is listed as 'Graff' when he used to be 'Stewart Graff.'  This probably doesn't matter to most folks, but I have over 2,000 movies and my own data base with every actor in every movie and all the other movies that actor is in.  I've been doing this for 30 years and am really disappointed as to the lack of info now.  I don't know what I can do to remedy this, I guess I just wanted to spout off.  Thanks for reading.

Cheryl: The IMDb policy on character names says:

Wherever possible, we list character names as they appear in on-screen credits, i.e. the end titles cast listing. We make occasional exceptions when character names are not listed on-screen or when the character descriptions in the end titles include spoilers, but as a rule we try to stick to credits as closely as possible.

So if Charlton Heston's character name was given in the credits of Earthquake (1974) just as "Graff", that's how he will be listed in IMDb, whether or not the character's first name is also indicated in the movie.

For comparison, if you ask people, "What was the name of the character played by Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark?", the most likely answer you will get is "Indiana Jones". But in the closing credits, the character's name is just given as the short form of his nickname, "Indy". And so IMDb lists the character as "Indy".

@gromit82  I do understand this concept, but someone used to go the extra mile to list the complete name.  I used to get it from IMDb all the time.  I was just interested in a reason.  Thanks for your reply and I guess I'll have to go back to running each movie and getting the names myself.
