Keyword "Police-Officer" and Gender-Versions: multiple keywords with same meaning, hundreds of combinations

Data-Analysis:

Main-Keyword:

gender-neutral-versions:

police-officer (6881 titles)

police-officers (0)

female-versions:

female-police-officer (327 titles)

female-police-officers (0)

male-versions:

male-police-officer (50 titles)

male-police-officers (0)

These are today's correct definitions and gender-equal. It is not Policeman and Policewoman anymore.

Alternative Keywords:

gender-neutral-versions:

cop (952 titles)

cops (0 - but used in combinations)

female-versions:

policewoman (1263 titles)

female-cop (221 titles)

police-woman (26 titles)

policewomen (0)

police-women (0)

male-versions:

policeman (4845 titles)

male-cop (0 - but used in combination)

police-man(0)

policemen (32 titles)

police-men (0)

Additional-Information:

Alternative Keywords are used in hundreds to thousands of keyword-combinations.

Suggestion:

  • Replace all alternative Keywords to Main-Keywords.
  • Replace all alternative Keywords in Keyword-Combinations to Main-Keywords.
  • Disable all alternative Keywords and Combinations for future uses.

Purposes:

  • Search for and adding new Keywords will be much more easier and efficient, cause the are not this many alternative keywords.
  • Keyword search results will be much more precise and list more titles of that, what users mean and expect as results.
  • Users do not have to search for multiple keywords and each possible combination to find all possible results they are looking for.
  • Reducing many Keyword-Combinations.

Future:

If this suggestion will be accepted, i may will work out more simimlar keyword problems.

Detailed Replace Suggestion:

  • cops, policemen -> police-officers
  • cop -> police-officer (automaticly replaces female-cop with female-police-officer and male-cop with male-police-officer)
  • policewoman, police-woman -> female-police-officer
  • policeman -> male-police-officer

Attention:

If replacing, think of order of changes and how using exact or partial matches, to keep the meaning of combinated keyword-phrases.

Test-Analysis show replacing could be done without issues.

Thank You!

But what if in the title itself, it is a very important part of the story that a police officer is a female? Would you want to throw that information away?

Hi, marco. Nowhere has it been proposed to throw such information away.

Hello marco - no i wouldn't :-)

  1. police-officer(s), female-police-officer(s) and male-police-officer(s) will remain as keywords.
  2. just their many associated alternative keywords will be transformed to these main keywords.
  3. because there will be no keyword just deleted, but transformed to main keywords, the meaning of information will always remain.
  4. the changings will only affect keywords in the keyword-database-table, not titles or any other additional information - like (short) descriptions (plots) or reviews.

Affected are only:

  • the "Keywords" section ("Plot Keyowrds") in the detailed information overview
  • the "Search Keywords" in direct keyword searches or advanced (title) searches
  • the "Adding Keywords" in Contributor pages.

Conclusions:

  • you can directly search for the female-police-officer keyword as usual - but you will get more title results. Because many alternative keywords (policewoman, female-cop) were transformed to female-police-officer. So you do not need to search for these alternative keywords anymore.
  • you can for example in advanced-title-search use the keyword female-police-officer, too.
  • in advanced-title-search you can also just type any other alternative word in the fields "title" or "plot" - cause these informations will not be affected from changings.

In the end you will get more (relevant) title results by keyword searches, but all other search-fields will return same results as usual.

I hope this information explained it well.

I misread (part of) your OP, Dataorganizer. Thanks for the detailed explanation. I agree it would be good if this were implemented. (except for police-officers, because plurals aren't allowed in the keywords section: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/keywords/GXQ22G5Y72TH8MJ5?ref_=helpsrall# )

marco,

that doesn't matter. It was me a pleasure.

Thank you for the hint and link, i didn't know that. Without plurals makes it even easier.

So there would be only 3 main keywords:

  • police-officer
  • female-police-officer
  • male-police-officer

Great!
