Is this a keyword search glitch?

Why, when searching a particular keyword, does one get a title whose keyword list DOES NOT include that particular keyword?  Example: "girl-with-glasses" for Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). (I can also give other examples.)

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) does have that keyword (girl with glasses).

Hence, It's not a glitch/bug.

The keyword "girl-with-glasses" is on the keyword display page but is not listed on the update page. The display page says there are 286 keywords but there are only 285 in the list on the update page.

This may mean that the keyword has just been added or deleted and the change has not yet reached all parts of the system or it may be some internal issue that staff will need to investigate.

I see it there now:

On the other hand, when I used the keyword search the results said there were 282 titles attached to it, but only 'Picnic...' is shown when I click it.

Maybe Bradley submitted so many edits that the servers can't keep up.

Data don't always show up on a page as soon as they were approved. Sometimes it may take days too. I've experienced this so I can tell for sure. But why that happen? I don't know. Peter is right; maybe the server cannot process all contributions from a user (or multiple) at once.

This has been going on for some time.  It often seems that the program wants to retain one or two or more titles for a keyword even after the keyword has been completely deleted.

My submissions are usually processed very expeditiously, so, when that doesn't happen, I get concerned and want to know why, and what amends I may need to make.

So, when I go to the title first and they to the keyword list, the keyword is there.  But, when I go to the keyword, and then go to the title, and then to the keyword list, the keyword is not there.  That may well be the problem.

Again, this only seems to happen to certain titles with no discernible reason.

Oh yeah, that's strange. I tried that too.

When I search for that keyword, it shows me 0 titles.

I think that's because I submitted a deletion by entering through the title, and then going to the keyword list.

In you enter through the keyword, then go to the title to the keyword list, it would still have been there --- except I deleted it!

@BonaFideBOSS

I am surprised that nobody has posted the following point yet. This is really more in response to @BonaFideBOSS's screenshot than @bradley_kent's original post, but I can definitely explain the discrepancies in the numbers shown in that screenshot.

When you see huge discrepancies in the number of titles applicable to a keyword as you compare the search results to the actual keyword page, then unless that particular keyword was recently mass-edited, the answer almost always lies in the fact that the keyword is being used on Adult titles.

Adult titles are picked up in the numbers in initial search results, but when you click on a search result to go to a keyword page, Adult titles are screened from the results.

Let's consider the keyword example shown in @BonaFideBOSS's screen capture. The keyword "girl-with-glasses" currently shows 332 titles in the search results:

girl-with-glasses (332 titles)

But when you click the link, it shows only 3 results:

https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=girl-with-glasses&ref_=fn_al_kw_1

Now try this slightly different search, which includes Adult titles:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?keywords=girl-with-glasses&adult=include

Voila! 332 results.

When I am trying to completely clean a bad keyword out of the IMDb system, and I notice number discrepancies of this type, I simply modify the search URL to pick up adult titles in the search. To modify the URL in that way, just replace "keyword" with "title" in the URL (thus changing the type of search) and add "&adult=include" at the end of the URL (thus picking up adult titles).

Now that this has been explained, if somebody wants to go to all the trouble, they can manually correct the 332 titles with "girl-with-glasses" and change them to "girl-wears-eyeglasses." Looks like somebody has dutifully made that change over the years with this keyword for the non-adult titles. (In this case, though, since these are adult titles, "girl-with-glasses" should probably be changed to "woman-wears-eyeglasses," since once can assume the vast majority of the characters are adult women.)

Only tangentially relevant but...  there is bug of sorts when one tries to add a keyword using the letter indexed scroll-down lists. There are so many keywords that selecting the letter "a" will get you a list that stops at "apartment-explosion" there is no way to scroll further down the list.  Most other letters have the same issue.  I've often wished that this mechanic could be updated

This problem still persists.  One enters a keyword, gets a list of titles that supposedly have that keyword,  BUT titles are STILL listed that DO NOT Have that keyword. Is this a technical problem, and can it be resolved, please?

BTW, Mr. Kent, in response to your query in the initial post, I bet you were experiencing these discrepancies shortly after editing the "girl-with-glasses"  keyword. I have found that keyword "remnants" (for lack of a better word) can remain in the system for up to 60 hours after they are edited. In other words, once a keyword is added or removed, the change may not be picked up in search numbers or results for  a couple days.

With that said, I have a tip for you that usually fixes or at least mitigates this type of lagging in the system. Searches on IMDb for keywords are much more up-to-date when you search for a keyword using a title search, rather than a keyword search. Here is what I mean:

Keyword Search:  https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=girl-with-glasses

Title Search: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?keywords=girl-with-glasses

And if you want to include Adult titles, here is the link:

Title Search, Adult Titles Included: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?keywords=girl-with-glasses&adult=include

I have found that the same exact search, when done as a title search, will be up-to-date within minutes (often as short as 5 minutes), but when done as a keyword search it can take days for the results to be up-to-date, as I said earlier.

Maybe you already knew about this, but if not, I hope that tip helps you with future keyword editing.

I previously said:

Over the past couple of days, I have noticed that it has been the exact opposite. Right now, keyword searches are more up-to-date than title searches in reflecting true keyword results, although neither type of search is 100% accurate.

For example, yesterday I completely eliminated the keyword "nude-body" from IMDb, as explained here. Thus, the true number of titles for this keyword is currently zero (0). Yet a keyword search for "nude-body" currently yields two (2) titles, while a title search yields five (5) titles.

Very interesting. I don't recall ever seeing it flipped like that before, where a keyword search is relatively more accurate than a title search.
