Is it possible to come up with movie recommendation based on common ratings between users ?

There is still no perfect recommendation for movies out there. My idea was to generate an algorithm of common user ratings. At a time when the entire world is under lockdown, wouldn't such a program be perfect. We could also create a $ 1 contribution for COVID 19 Virus Fund for every recommendation .

How would your "algorithm of common user ratings" work?

If x number of people gave common high rating to a movie, while another group rated the same movie below 5 or even 4, a distinctive group would emerge. I find youtube's recommendations to be spot on, given the massive number of subscribers topics, music genres.....etc. So if it can be done there why not with movies and common or dissimilar tastes.

I don't follow how you propose to use the information you pose: "If x number of people gave common high rating to a movie, while another group rated the same movie below 5 or even 4, a distinctive group would emerge."

Are you aware of the recommendations IMDb already makes on the homepage? Look for

My complaint about what I find there: it's mostly titles I already have on my lists, which are many. And I'd like to have a more neutral way to remove a title from the recs, other than "not interested".

How would it work? Who would pay the $1 for each contribution and who would get the money? I live in Britain, would my contribution go to America, would I have a say it would go to the NHS? Raising money is great if it goes to the right places and used correctly, but this is a time when the rich should be helping the world (some are) not the poor trying to cover the costs of mistakes by the rich governments/corporations.

If what you suggest resulted me in paying to write or rate something, or even use the website, I simply wouldn't. I'm out of work and chances are won't be back in work till after the lockdown and even then it will take months for things to pick up being optimistic.

Heart is in the right place Naresh, but in reality, how would it work and would it be forced onto users?
There is nothing stopping people from making their own contributions. Provide equipment for drs and nurses or help the workers (more important than health services) that put food in the shops. If no medical facilities, only (some of) the ill die, if no food, everyone dies. There are already many charities set up where anyone can contribute, person or business and it is in the interest of everyone, more so businesses that the pandemic is over asap.

As for recommendations, may I point you to a website called Justwatch. I prefer the search engine over Amazon's very own. Find it easier to find films/TV. They have a section called "popular" which you can filter however you want. Maybe this might be a help for you.

The contribution part is more of an after thought of charity. I have used justwatch quite a bit in the past, after a while they too become ineffective.
