IMDb Staff: Please remove the auto-conversion from the keyword "man-woman-relationship"
Dear IMDb Staff:
Four years ago, on this other thread, IMDb staff member @Will implemented an auto-conversion that converts "man-woman-relationship" into "male-female-relationship":
man-woman-relationship (0 titles) --> male-female-relationship (8525 titles)
Will made that change based on an erroneous assumption that those two keywords are synonyms (duplicates):
I agree that man-woman-relationship is the same as male-female-relationship, however I'm not sure why we ever banned that as a keyword as I'm sure users would find that search term useful. If it plays a part in the plot of the title I'm not sure why this wouldn't be considered as ineligible and we should remove this block and re-enable those keywords. I don't see any point in our guide which would make the keyword male-female-relationship ineligible.
The problem is that "man-woman-relationship" is not the same as "male-female-relationship."
The latter keyword, "male-female-relationship," is broader and encompasses other types of relationships:
Broad Keyword
male-female-relationship (8525 titles)
Examples of Specific Keywords
man-woman-relationship (0 titles)
boy-girl-relationship (331 titles)
girl-boy-relationship (10 titles)
boy-woman-relationship (8 titles)
woman-boy-relationship (26 titles)
man-girl-relationship (89 titles)
girl-man-relationship (57 titles)
old-man-girl-relationship (6 titles)
older-man-girl-relationship (3 titles)
older-man-young-girl-relationship (153 titles)
older-man-younger-girl-relationship (18 titles)
older-man-younger-woman-relationship (1591 titles)
older-woman-younger-man-relationship (1211 titles)
younger-man-older-woman-relationship (34 titles)
younger-woman-older-man-relationship (40 titles)
rich-boy-poor-girl-relationship (7 titles)
white-man-asian-woman-relationship (72 titles)
gay-man-lesbian-woman-relationship (29 titles)
black-man-white-woman-relationship (262 titles)
black-woman-white-man-relationship (40 titles)
widow-single-man-relationship (47 titles)
As a result of all of this, only "man-woman-relationship," and none of the other specific keywords, is auto-converting to the broader "male-female-relationship." Also, for the past four years, the keyword "man-woman-relationship" has not been accepted, and as a result the number of titles with this keyword remains at 0, while the other specific keywords have been allowed to increase naturally.
Meanwhile, in addition to the keywords listed above, multiple similar keywords remain in the system, and continue to be accepted (without any auto-conversions to broader keywords):
woman-woman-relationship (139 titles)
* man-man-relationship (1 title)
girl-girl-relationship (20 titles)
woman-girl-relationship (12 titles)
man-boy-relationship (111 titles)
boy-boy-relationship (8 titles)
older-man-younger-man-relationship (295 titles)
older-woman-younger-woman-relationship (101 titles)
The bottom line is that the keywords "man-woman-relationship" and "male-female-relationship" are not duplicates, and therefore one of these keywords should not be auto-converting into the other. Both are valid keywords, and both of them should be accepted. It makes no sense to single out the keyword "man-woman-relationship" for different treatment from all the other keywords listed above. I am confident that this was simply an unintentional error by IMDb staff, based on an erroneous assumption.
Can staff please remove the auto-conversion from the keyword "man-woman-relationship," so that it no longer converts to "male-female-relationship?"
man-woman-relationship (0 titles) ≠ male-female-relationship (8525 titles)
Thank you very much.

Hi @keyword_expert -
I have now removed the auto-conversion for the keyword you referenced. The change should be live on the site shortly.
Cheers!
