IMDb Staff: Action needed for the keyword "inter-racial"

Dear IMDb staff:

I have a special request regarding the keyword "inter-racial":

inter-racial (465 titles)

As shown above, that keyword currently has 465 titles.

After some recent auditing, all 465 of those titles are Adult titles.

With that in mind, I propose the following two-step process:

1. Merge "inter-racial" into "interracial-sex":

inter-racial (465 titles)  -->  interracial-sex (8720 titles)

Then, after Step 1 is accomplished:

2. Set up "inter-racial" for auto-conversion to "interracial":

inter-racial (0 titles)  -->  interracial (1203 titles)

That two-step process, followed in that order, makes sense because we know that the current 465 instances of "inter-racial" are all intended to mean "interracial-sex," while in the future, "inter-racial" might mean "interracial-sex," "interracial-friendship," "interracial-couple," "interracial-family," etc.

Thank you for considering this request.

Hi @keyword_expert & All -

I can see that all keywords related to "inter-racial" have since been removed/cleaned-up.

Concerning whether to block "inter-racial" or auto-convert to "interracial", I have blocked it since as a standalone it doesn't provide context and ideally it will encourage the contributor to submit a more defined keyword

I hope this helps!

@Michelle The keyword "inter-racial" is still there -- it's just that all 465 instances of this keyword are Adult titles.

Check out this link:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?keywords=inter-racial&adult=include

As proposed at the beginning of this post, the 465 current instances of "inter-racial" should be merged into "interracial-sex."

I am fine with blocking "inter-racial," I just think it may be a little premature to do that before the "interracial" keyword is audited (and then both keywords could be blocked together). But it's your call.

Looks like the 465 instances of "inter-racial" have now been merged into "interracial-sex." I now consider this thread to be solved.

Should IMDb have an automatic correction of something into a standalone adjective like interracial, which is meaningless by itself?

I would suggest blocking inter-racial without redirecting.

@Peter_pbn I thought about that before posting. My thinking was blocking might be a good long-term goal, but is not necessary at this point.

The big problem is that "interracial" still exists, and 1/6 of the instances of "interracial" are non-Adult titles:

interracial (1203 titles)

Ideally, "interracial" on non-Adult titles would also eventually be audited, and then all Adult instances of "interracial" could be merged into "interracial-sex," just like I'm currently requesting for "inter-racial."

At that point, perhaps both keywords could be blocked.

In the meantime, there is little harm in allowing "interracial" (and "inter-racial" merged into "interracial") to continue to be added, especially since the vast majority of instances of these keywords are going to Adult titles. When these keywords are added to Adult titles, I think everyone understands what they mean, even if they are otherwise arguably "meaningless," as you put it.

The real solution would be to block these keywords from all non-Adult titles, but then to auto-convert the keywords to "interracial-sex" on all Adult titles. But I don't think IMDb's system is capable of making a distinction like that.

To be clear, I meant blocking inter-racial, not interracial.

@Peter_pbn I understood that.

I agree, and also note that either 'interracial-romance' or 'interracial-marriage' is preferable to 'interracial-couple' or 'interracial-love'; 'race-relations' is probably more accurate than simply 'interracial' in a lot of cases. I'll also suggest that 'interracial-child' and 'interracial-baby' be merged into 'biracial-child' and 'biracial-baby' respectively (possibly also the same for 'interracial-family').

@scgary66

I think most if not all of these concepts are distinct (not duplicates). A couple, a marriage, love, and romance can all mean different things. So I don't think mergers would be appropriate there.

I do agree that "interracial-child" and "interracial-baby" are not great keywords, but I'm not sure they should be mass-merged into "biracial" keywords. For example, if one or more of the parents are biracial, than the baby or child is better described as multiracial rather than biracial. I do see that there are no existing keywords for "multiracial-child" or "multiracial-baby," but there should be.

In any event, "interracial-child" and "interracial-baby" only have 20 and 18 titles assigned to them currently. I try to focus most of my mass merger requests on keywords or multiple keyword combinations that total at least 50 titles, for efficiency purposes.
