IMDB Ratings Malfunction

Hello, I directed a movie THE LAST DEAL (The Last Deal (2023) - Reference View - IMDb) and within the last month there has been manipulation with our rating by no doing of our own. I have zero control of people buying/manipulating ratings but it seems there's been an abundance of high ratings on the film which has caused the score to go down dramatically to a 5.0. I believe many of our legit ratings have been discounted because of this. It's very odd that a film with a high score on Rotten Tomatoes, plays on Starz/Encore and was one of the top films in The New York Times has a 5/10 rating? One rating/review recently posted on June 11th is word for word the same review the user has given 70 other movies (every movie they've reviewed actually). Can this issue please be looked into because it's dangerous when false ratings are given especially to indie films and the filmmakers are working to get future films made. As a side note, I've emailed twice about this but no response. Thank you!

Jonathan: To spell things out, the particular June 11 review you are objecting to can be found at https://www.imdb.com/review/rw9839636/ ("Probably the worst film ever, sleepy, with too many meaningless long shots ....") And the reviewer's other reviews, which also call almost every other movie he has seen "Probably the worst film ever, sleepy, with too many meaningless long shots ...." can be found at https://www.imdb.com/user/ur160736111/ I have no comment on the ratings for your film; I just wanted to provide a link for the IMDb staff's use to the user who is giving film after film substantially the same review.

Hi @Jonathan5922 - Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are aware that there are people who may vote for the sole purpose of trying to inflate/deflate the rating for a movie. We have several safeguards in place to automatically detect and defeat this type of ballot stuffing: even though we count and display all unaltered votes in the rating breakdown, we apply several countermeasures against all attempts to skew the rating for the weighted rating you see displayed on the site. We will review the title in question to ensure that the weighted average is displaying as intended. For more information on our abuse detection methods, or details about IMDb ratings and weighted averages, please refer to our Ratings FAQ. Lastly, concerning the duplicated User Reviews, these have all been removed and I have taken the appropriate actions toward the contributor responsible. Cheers!

@Michelle Thank you Michelle for the response and correcting the duplicated user. Appreciate you looking into this and reviewing the title. I wouldn't say this has been solved though. The rating has taken a hit because of the manipulation and I'm not even sure normal scores are being recorded or past normal score in the higher range have been accounted for; as perhaps they've been lumped in with the manipulated votes. As an example on the opposite side of the spectrum, although the duplicate user's review has been taken down his 1 rating is still recorded. I'd like to see the film's rating at least reflect the true score by the people that have voted. It's a small film but with a very big cast so I know we had a large amount of people that enjoyed the film and voted higher but yet the rating stays low. I strongly feel some ratings have not been recorded properly. Thank you again, I know you all are trying your best.

Hi @Michelle wanted to kindly follow up on this. Our rating is still extremely low due to the manipulations and legit votes not being counted. Thank you.

@Jonathan5922 Hi! We have reviewed this title and can confirm the weighted rating is displaying as intended. We have several safeguards in place to automatically detect and defeat vote manipulation. When unusual voting activity is detected, a different weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system. To ensure our rating mechanism remains effective, we don't disclose the exact method used to generate the rating. For more information on our abuse detection methods, or details about IMDb ratings and weighted averages, please refer to our Ratings FAQ.

@Bethanny Thank you Bethanny but I respectfully disagree. I legit had some friends vote on the film in the last couple weeks and the rating didn't move at all. Today, maybe a few votes have been registered in the last week and the rating dropped from a 5.0 to 4.7. This is extremely reckless and it's inaccurate. It costs future indie films from going into production because agents/managers look at past films and when a film has a rating that is just plain miserable it reflects poorly on the filmmakers. I know the rating is not true nor accurate. Is there someone else I can speak with? Thank you.

Hi @Jonathan5922, As previously mentioned above, our team has reviewed the title and determined the weighted rating is displaying as intended, with the system's safeguards detecting all unusual voting activity and calculating the user rating appropriately. This is done to preserve a reliable rating scale. We cannot provide any further details on this mechanism other than that already detailed in our Ratings FAQ.

Hello, I directed a movie titled THE LAST DEAL (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3326138/). I've wrote to this forum last year about ratings malfunctions and not our true score being reflected. Thank you for prior answers even though I do not agree with them. Since December 2024, the title has received 16 more votes but yet the score has not changed. These are all real scores from reviewers around the world yet their vote has not counted. I personally know this because our Instagram page receives reviews from reviewers around the world and I'm sent their posts. I have screenshots on IMDB from December to support the amount of votes the title had at that time. My question is why aren't these votes being counted? Thank you as always for your responses, Jonathan
Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled Ratings Malfunction

Hi Jonathan5922, It is detailed in our Ratings FAQ (https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/ratings-faq/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV#) that ratings from different users can be weighted differently, for example: "(...)IMDb already calculates weighted user averages using a mechanism to neutralize the impact of attempts to artificially inflate/deflate a title's rating. This mechanism is applied to all titles. In other words, just because the ratings breakdown shows a large number of ratings, it doesn't necessarily mean that those ratings have the same weight. Rest assured that we carefully monitor rating patterns for these titles to determine our best course of action." We regret that we have not been able to address your concerns to your satisfaction, or take the actions you have requested. Our customer service department will not be able to offer any additional insight on this matter. Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you for the explanation. Unfortunately, I'm not understanding, and you and the staff are blatantly gaslighting me. You're telling me that the 20 new ratings as of posting this have zero weight? I know for a fact, IMDB is not counting any of the new votes. Most of these are legit ratings by people who post on IMDB regularly. I see them tag the movie in their Instagram posts. They are actual reviewers. But yet with all the aforementioned info; the rating hasn't even moved by .1. As an indie filmmkaer that has mountains to climb to even get a movie made nevermind released, this is not a conducive practice by IMDB. Please, I'm asking, to look into this. Kindly, I can not accept a canned answer. Thank you for understanding.
