IMDB Ratings Malfunction

Hello,

I directed a movie THE LAST DEAL (The Last Deal (2023) - Reference View - IMDb) and within the last month there has been manipulation with our rating by no doing of our own.  I have zero control of people buying/manipulating ratings but it seems there's been an abundance of high ratings on the film which has caused the score to go down dramatically to a 5.0.  I believe many of our legit ratings have been discounted because of this.  It's very odd that a film with a high score on Rotten Tomatoes, plays on Starz/Encore and was one of the top films in The New York Times has a 5/10 rating?  One rating/review recently posted on June 11th is word for word the same review the user has given 70 other movies (every movie they've reviewed actually).  Can this issue please be looked into because it's dangerous when false ratings are given especially to indie films and the filmmakers are working to get future films made.  As a side note, I've emailed twice about this but no response. Thank you!

Jonathan: To spell things out, the particular June 11 review you are objecting to can be found at https://www.imdb.com/review/rw9839636/ ("Probably the worst film ever, sleepy, with too many meaningless long shots ....")

And the reviewer's other reviews, which also call almost every other movie he has seen "Probably the worst film ever, sleepy, with too many meaningless long shots ...." can be found at https://www.imdb.com/user/ur160736111/

I have no comment on the ratings for your film; I just wanted to provide a link for the IMDb staff's use to the user who is giving film after film substantially the same review.

Hi @Jonathan5922 -

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We are aware that there are people who may vote for the sole purpose of trying to inflate/deflate the rating for a movie. We have several safeguards in place to automatically detect and defeat this type of ballot stuffing: even though we count and display all unaltered votes in the rating breakdown, we apply several countermeasures against all attempts to skew the rating for the weighted rating you see displayed on the site. We will review the title in question to ensure that the weighted average is displaying as intended.

For more information on our abuse detection methods, or details about IMDb ratings and weighted averages, please refer to our Ratings FAQ.

Lastly, concerning the duplicated User Reviews, these have all been removed and I have taken the appropriate actions toward the contributor responsible.

Cheers!

@Michelle Thank you Michelle for the response and correcting the duplicated user.

Appreciate you looking into this and reviewing the title.  I wouldn't say this has been solved though.  The rating has taken a hit because of the manipulation and I'm not even sure normal scores are being recorded or past normal score in the higher range have been accounted for; as perhaps they've been lumped in with the manipulated votes.  As an example on the opposite side of the spectrum, although the duplicate user's review has been taken down his 1 rating is still recorded.  I'd like to see the film's rating at least reflect the true score by the people that have voted.  It's a small film but with a very big cast so I know we had a large amount of people that enjoyed the film and voted higher but yet the rating stays low.  I strongly feel some ratings have not been recorded properly.  Thank you again, I know you all are trying your best.

Hi @Michelle wanted to kindly follow up on this.  Our rating is still extremely low due to the manipulations and legit votes not being counted.  Thank you.

@Jonathan5922 Hi!

We have reviewed this title and can confirm the weighted rating is displaying as intended. We have several safeguards in place to automatically detect and defeat vote manipulation. When unusual voting activity is detected, a different weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system. To ensure our rating mechanism remains effective, we don't disclose the exact method used to generate the rating.

For more information on our abuse detection methods, or details about IMDb ratings and weighted averages, please refer to our Ratings FAQ.

@Bethanny Thank you Bethanny but I respectfully disagree.  I legit had some friends vote on the film in the last couple weeks and the rating didn't move at all.  Today, maybe a few votes have been registered in the last week and the rating dropped from a 5.0 to 4.7.  This is extremely reckless and it's inaccurate.  It costs future indie films from going into production because agents/managers look at past films and when a film has a rating that is just plain miserable it reflects poorly on the filmmakers.  I know the rating is not true nor accurate.  Is there someone else I can speak with?  Thank you.

Hi @Jonathan5922,

As previously mentioned above, our team has reviewed the title and determined the weighted rating is displaying as intended, with the system's safeguards detecting all unusual voting activity and calculating the user rating appropriately. This is done to preserve a reliable rating scale. We cannot provide any further details on this mechanism other than that already detailed in our Ratings FAQ.
