As Peter_pbn mentioned, you need to link your user account with your name page account in order to link them together, to answer your question, yes, both of the accounts will be linked together after you claim the name page.

rather confusing has IMDB changed in the last year?

because previously i did not have to join IMDBPro, all I did was create a new name for myself in credits and it would automatically be linked to my account.

Nothing has changed. You don't have to claim a page. If you have already added credits in the past, you can simply add additional credits to the same name.
