IMDB drops our rating from 7.6 to 6.1 after we flag a fake review!

See attached image. With 111 votes, our film was at a 7.6/10 rating. We were getting fake reviews posted by people who didn't like the Christian content in our film. We contacted IMDB and asked them to remove one of the reviews that was clearly fake, and then immediately after our rating drops from 7.6 to 6.1! It's not mathematically possible. Even the raw data mean suggests that the score is a 7.3. Was this a rogue employee at IMDB? Does this mean IMDB has the ability to handicap a movie's rating on the back end? I can't see how they're going to explain this? My previous film had severe rating drops as well, it's currently at a 5/10, with a rotten tomatoes audience score of 92% at 500+ reviews. Something is going on! So what's the answer?

Hi @SevenfoldFilms,

We are aware that there are people who may vote for the sole purpose of trying to inflate/deflate the rating for a title. We have several safeguards in place to automatically detect and defeat this type of ballot stuffing: even though we count and display all unaltered votes in the rating breakdown, we apply several countermeasures against all attempts to skew the rating for the weighted rating you see displayed on the site.

For more information on our abuse detection methods, or details about IMDb ratings and weighted averages, please refer to our Ratings FAQ.

I hope this helps!

Thank you for responding Ozzy. However, could you please tell us why specifically we dropped 1.5 stars out of 10 in a single vote, in a single day? At 111 votes, we were at 7.6. The day before at 109 votes, we were at a 7.7. The day after we had 112 votes and we dropped a staggering 1.5 points down to a 6.1. That is mathematically impossible. So could you please tell us what's going on? We have sales riding on what people read on IMDB, this is very serious to us. Thank you for your help.

@SevenfoldFilms Hi!

 We don't use the arithmetic mean, we use a  weighted average. Visit our ratings FAQ linked above.

Cheers!

Hello Bethanny,

No one seems to be actually answering the question though. How did our score drop from 7.6 to 6.1 within a single vote? I attached the image in the original post as proof. This jeopardizes the sales of our film and it's something IMDB needs to take seriously. How did that happen and is there a handicap or manual override someone at IMDB used to do this?

Hi @SevenfoldFilms,

As @Bethanny mentioned, we use a weighted average which is explained in the Ratings FAQ. Otherwise, please review the below FAQ item for further guidance on how the weighted average can affect a title's overall rating.

The rating on a title changed even though the total number of votes did not. Can you explain this?

There are several possible explanations for this. First, users are allowed to delete their own votes. So if the rating changes even when the total doesn't, it usually means that some people have deleted their vote while the same number of people have added theirs. Another common explanation is that the weight assigned to votes cast by certain users has changed, so the weighted rating will be affected even when no new votes have been cast.

Finally, please remember that our voting system is always being improved and the formulas used to calculate ratings (and defeat ballot stuffing) are tweaked regularly -- weighted ratings are frequently recalculated, so when the formula is changed the ratings will also change even without new votes.

Rest assured, all calculations are applied automatically and there's no human bias in how aggregate ratings are calculated.

I hope this helps!
