genre keyword: "documentary-film"

IMDb staff,

Over the past 24 hours, the keyword "documentary-film" has been added to hundreds of titles, bringing the total up to more than 800.

https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=documentary-film&ref_=fn_kw_kw_14

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?keywords=documentary-film&adult=include

According to the keyword guidelines, genres (other than subgenres) are "unacceptable" as keywords.

Is the proliferation of the guideline "documentary-film" the work of the IMDb staff or IMDb contributor(s)?

Is the prohibition against main-genre keywords being relaxed?

Hi keyword_expert -

Thanks for reporting, I have now removed this Keyword, which was added by several contributors.    While we allow sub-genre keywords, we don't currently allow direct genre keywords.

Cheers!

@Michelle Thank you for clarifying and resolving this issue! It was quite a mystery for the past week or so.

p.s. Although I don't know who has been dramatically expanding the keyword "documentary-film," I was able to figure out the exact method that is being used here.

Essentially, the keyword "documentary-film" is being added to all titles that already previously had subgenre keywords like this:

sports-documentary (259 titles)

nature-documentary (175 titles)

soccer-documentary (79 titles)

animal-documentary (26 titles)

@Michelle

The "documentary-film" keyword is now up to 1,000 titles.

Is the keyword allowed, despite the fact that the guidelines expressly deem main genres "unacceptable" as keywords?

Is this "documentary-film" keyword being added by staff, or by contributors?

If this is being done by a contributor, it is probably better to break the news to them asap that the keyword isn't allowed, or otherwise they will continue putting in a lot of wasted time and effort.

@Michelle The keyword "documentary-film" appears to have stabilized at 1,100 titles. But just a week ago, it had less than 100 titles.

I am still very curious to know what exactly has been happening with this genre keyword. Were all these edits applying the "documentary-film" keyword made by staff, or by a contributor? Are main genres allowed now as keywords?

This is all "well and good," BUT...

All "bad" keywords that have "-film," "-films" or "-movie" addenda need to be carefully audited to see If they need "(genre)-filmmaking" as a keyword, or "(genre)-as-a-subject" as a keyword, or "(genre)" as a genre, or need to be deleted and banned.

@bradley_kent No worries. I "audited" the "documentary-film" keyword the past few days as I watched it grow. I was able to add the Documentary genre to about 30 titles from among the 1,100 titles the keyword had been applied to, and I also used the keyword to remove or modify some counterpart inapplicable keywords like "nature-documentary," "sports-documentary," etc. As of yesterday, the keyword had 100% overlap with the Documentary Genre as a result of my auditing. So in a way, this short-lived keyword was actually a good thing.

Thank you.  BUT... this "bad" keyword should not have been submitted or accepted in the first place.  THAT would have saved us a lot of work, trouble and grief.

@bradley_kent Agreed. Now let's see what we can do about blocking the rest of the genre keywords. I know you're busy with another project, but can you at least identify the categories that you believe are ready for blocking/purging? I feel like a lot of them are ready, and I hope you would agree with me on at least some of them. Which ones?
