False release dates for unaired TV pilots

Hello,

So what's the policy regarding adding fake release years for unaired TV pilots?

Example being Civil (2016) (TV) - this pilot was shot in 2016, and TNT passed on it. It never aired anyplace, and it never will. Yet someone keeps adding "2016" (unknown) for the United States in the release dates section (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5815490/releaseinfo/).

I've deleted this multiple times (latest is #230802-205840-658000) but it keeps getting added back. This is not the only pilot this has occurred with.

Can someone contact whoever's submitting this and tell them what they're doing wrong, block the addition, clarify something for me, etc.? I mean this stuff really is fake news.

Thanks.

@cinnamon_thunder You asked:

So what's the policy regarding adding fake release years for unaired TV pilots?

The policy is that fake years should not be added as release dates, however, we need to manually set the year-of-release to the original intended release to prevent the title from being eternally in-production when it is not. We have done this before even when the title has finally had some kind of public release, for example, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217055/ which (correctly) remains anchored in 1962 vs. being moved to 2001.

The help page at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/can-i-submit-data-for-an-unreleased-unfinished-film/GV6VAW5UE5LA25P3 is not clear on this point so we will open a ticket to have it updated.  Thanks for flagging this.

We have made this change with https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5815490/

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham

This piggybacks off of his question so I figured it would be appropriated to ask.

Years ago there was a big thing about The Foresaken Westerns.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7263234/fullcredits?ref_=tt_rv

Years ago a person saw the guy who runs this site and he has a YouTube channel he calls The Foresaken Westerns. The person contacted staff and told them this is new stuff. The reality was that a vast majority of it were old shows and the credits were rightly removed from the ones already listed on IMDb.

However, there were a few titles that had been around for years but nobody ever added them to the database. They were unsold pilots that had made the rounds and the guy who ran the Foresaken Westerns just uploaded them on his YouTube channel.

Well I tried to anchor one to his proper release date in 1956. Basically at the time staff said well because it wasn't in the database the cast should be listed in the 2017 version. Same with a few other titles. Somebody has now added them in their proper release dates but the actor credits remain on the 2017 and 2018 things.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7509954/reference/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7380058/reference/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14820592/reference/

was another one

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7270542/reference/

https://www.imdb.com/find/?q=fremont%20trailblazre&ref_=nv_sr_sm

After the dust was cleared these remained and now all these actors who died many years ago have 2017 credits because these credits are locked.  Years ago I tried to submit a VHS box cover to show Fremont was out in the 1980s but the response I got was basically "nope, it was listed for the first time in 2017"

So can this be corrected and the cast be removed from the Foresaken Westerns since it seems all but The Buckskin Rangers are actually in the database now as it was their proper release year. I literally had copies of every one of them in the 2000s. It's comical because I knew the guy who actually owned the original copy of The Buckskin Rangers and he was the exact copy at conventions in the 1980s on VHS and on DVDs in the 2000s because that's were The Foresaken Westerns copies came from.

Raymond Hatton who died in 1971 literally has a 2017 credit as do many others including crew.

@phillip Thanks for raising this.  It sounds like these should exist as separate titles and the repackagings should be shell episodes, see https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/episode-guidelines/GDF7HR6CCCBKU3CP  (see the first bulletpoint in the Overview).

Leave this with us while we get the year-of-release policy properly documented and supported.

Just as a continuation to whatever staff member reads this thread, another series that needs to be fixed is which seems to be somebody creating their youtube videos and editing footage together and either listing it as new footage or archive footage creating 2020 credits on actors who died in the 1960s.
