Episodic writer credits

The pages for individual TV episodes now appear to be routinely listing positions like "executive story editor" and "story editor" within the writing credits for an individual episode. I consider this to be inappropriate and potentially misleading, as these are show staff positions, not episodic writing credits. The proper place to list these positions is within the main crew list, not the episode writing credits at the top of the page.

If someone has a WGA writing credit on an episode that would be reflected on screen with one of "story by" "teleplay by" or "written by". I feel that IMDb should try to reflect this as accurately as possible.

Hopefully I've explained that clearly, and I'd be interested to know if people agree/disagree that this policy should be looked at.

This is where they belong. It is clearly detailed in the writer's guide. Also, these positions can change within a season or a series. They are also given as "episodic credits" much the same as "created by" and "developed by" are.

I respectfully disagree. It is not where they belong. Their current position implies a specific writing contribution to that episode, which is simply not the case.

If someone is credited on screen for a specific episode, the credit should be attached to that specific episode. If they didn't work on that particular episode, the attribute (credit only) should be attached to the credit.

Marco - yes it should be credited to that specific episode, but not the writing credits for that particular episode. Put such credits in the main cast and crew section for that episode, not the special writer/director section, that’s all I’m saying.

Hi Adam -

As Adrian mentioned above, "story editor" and "executive story editor" credits now belong under the "Writer" section on the site. As mentioned in our current guide:

Staff writers, story editors, story coordinators, story supervisors and story consultants also belong in the writers section.

Hi Michelle - thanks for this. I understand that it’s your policy to put these credits there...what I’m saying is that I think that policy itself is wrong. I doubt you’ll find a single TV writer who agrees with it.

Exactly that, Eboy. They belong in the main cast/crew section for that episode, in my view, because they are not writing credits.
