Duplicate Keywords - List #9 (Proposal for Permanent Merging and Auto-Conversion) (misc. & "theater" keywords)

Here is the ninth installment in my list of duplicate keywords proposed for permanent merging and auto-conversion.

As with my prior lists, I propose that the IMDb community be allowed one week to review and comment on this list before I formally submit it to IMDb staff for action.

Every duplicate keyword (or combination of multiple keywords) on this list has at least 50 titles (with the exception of theatre-actor, which I am including to be consistent with theatre-actress).

The mergers should be made in the direction of the arrows.

I don't agree that keywords like mario or sesame-street should be merged with reference- keywords. It dilutes the difference between titles that are part of those franchises and titles that just make passing reference to them.

There are -character keywords that can be used where appropriate, or new ones can be created.

I wondered about that. You might be right -- I have noticed similar keywords like "star-wars" and "star-trek" which seem to be used for the same purpose. I do see your point about potential dilution.

It seems to me that people should be using keywords like "mario-franchise," "sesame-street-franchise," "star-wars-franchise," etc. for this purpose, or something like that, if anyone can think of something better. There are also similar keywords like "die-hard-franchise," "james-bond-franchise," "marvel-cinematic-universe" and "the-conjuring-universe."

My problem with "sesame-street," "mario," "sonic-the-hedgehog," etc. is that these keywords refer to items that already have their own IMDb entries (titles, characters, etc). I believe these keywords may be in violation of the guidelines, although that isn't entirely clear, because the guidelines are pretty vague about when "reference-to" can and must be used.

(I have been meaning to write a separate post asking staff to clarify the exact circumstances under which the "reference-to" prefix should be used, must be used, and should not be used. I will eventually get around to that, with some examples to illustrate the possibilities.)

Peter, what do you think of mario-related keywords referring to specific characters, like "luigi," "princess-peach," "yoshi," etc. Should those remain as keywords? The guidelines prohibit "standalone names" as keywords -- I take that to include not only actor and actress names, but also character names. (Again, the guidelines could and should be made a lot more clear on this stuff.)

Those keywords for specific characters appearing in a title should preferably have the -character suffix.

The guideline about the -character suffix is only a few years old. Before that there was a rule that character names shouldn't be keywords because IMDb used to have searchable character pages. But rules aren't always followed.

@Peter_pbn  I removed the items you objected to from the list.

Hi keyword_expert -

These keyword merge-auto-conversion updates have now been made, the changes should be reflected live on the site shortly.

Cheers!

@Michelle

I checked the list, and it looks like you might have missed a couple:

fight-the-system (216 titles) --> fighting-the-system (52 titles)

woman-wears-a-mini-skirt (9 titles) --> woman-wears-a-miniskirt (187 titles)

I also neglected to include a couple keywords for merging in favor of "seduction." These should be merged and set up for auto-conversion as well:

seduce (13 titles)  -->  seduced (5 titles)  --> seduction (4920 titles)

Finally, my hope with these lists is to allow the community of contributors a full seven days to comment on the proposals before they are acted on by staff. In this case seven days had not yet passed.  I may have inadvertently confused things by starting the list as a "problem" post instead of an "idea" post. For my next installment, I will start it as an idea post, and then after seven days I will change it to a problem post and will alert you directly to the list.

@Michelle

I am bumping this thread, in the hope that these remaining keyword mergers can still be accomplished. These are keywords from this batch that one of us overlooked. Thank you.

fight-the-system (216 titles) --> fighting-the-system (54 titles)

woman-wears-a-mini-skirt (13 titles) --> woman-wears-a-miniskirt (215 titles)

seduce (13 titles)  -->  seduced (5 titles)  --> seduction (5006 titles)

____

Edit: these final keywords were later updated as part of list #11.
