Duplicate Keywords - List #73 (one-word keywords pt. 4) (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion)

Here is the next installment of my lists of proposed keywords for permanent merger and auto-conversion.

I am posting this list for fellow contributors to review first and raise any objections or questions. I will wait at least 28 days before changing this post to a "problem" post and asking IMDb staff to make the proposed changes.

The mergers and auto-conversions should be made in the direction of the arrows.

I don't think that bloody and blood are the same thing but then again bloody should not be a standalone keyword. It should be blood-<noun>

@adrian That was pretty much my thinking as well, except I think you meant to say it should be "bloody-" (rather than "blood-"). "Bloody" means "stained or covered with blood," or "bleeding," or "characterized by bloodshed." I agree "bloody" shouldn't be a standalone keyword. The best solution I could come up with was to merge it into "blood."

Classmate and schoolmate mean two different things.  All classmates are schoolmates, but NOT all schoolmates are classmates. One can be in the same school, but not in the same class.

@bradley_kent That is a good point that I had not considered. I will adjust the list accordingly. I do wonder whether all contributors have appreciated this distinction, but even if some of them do, that should matter.

fat (216 titles)  -->  fatness (5 titles)  -->  chubby (18 titles)  -->   corpulent (3 titles)  -->  corpulence (4 titles)  -->  over-weight (6 titles)   -->  overweight (318 titles)

obese (74 titles) -->  obesity (659 titles)

Some titles are specifically about fat (the noun), like Fat Fiction.

Words like fatness or corpulence could just as well be merged with obesity. If you think they can be merged with overweight, I'm not sure why you are not suggesting merging overweight with obesity.

@Peter_pbn

Interestingly, even that title Fat Fiction already has the keyword "obesity," which I think bolsters the appropriateness of "overweight" for this title.

I think if someone wants to indicate "fats" (noun) as defined below, they could just use the keyword "fats" (this would be an exception to the normal rule against plural keywords), or use "saturated fat" or "unsaturated fat" which are existing keywords.

any of several white or yellowish greasy substances, forming the chief part of adipose tissue of animals and also occurring in plants, that when pure are colorless, odorless, and tasteless and are either solid or liquid esters of glycerol with fatty acids; fats are insoluble in water or cold alcohol but soluble in ether, chloroform, or benzene: used in the manufacture of soap, paints, and other protective coatings and in cooking

In fact, I will add "saturated-fat" and "fats" to Fat Fiction.

Are there any other titles where this possible meaning of "fat" might have been intended?

I completely agree that some of these words, in particular "corpulence," could have been merged into "obesity" rather than "overweight." As a matter of fact, when I first drafted this list, I did have "corpulence" merging into "obesity." But when typing the post I changed that, after coming to the conclusion that there is a difference between "overweight" and "obesity," namely being that obesity is a more severe form of being overweight.

o·bese , adj.
very fat or overweight; corpulent.

Now I know what you may be thinking here -- this definition equates "obese" and "corpulent" as synonyms. That is what I thought at first, too. But then I looked up "corpulent" and "corpulence," which equated these words with "fat."

cor·pu·lent, adj.
large or bulky of body; portly; stout; fat.

cor·pu·lence, n.
bulkiness or largeness of body; fatness; portliness.

So I ultimately came to the conclusion that corpulence should be more equated with "fat" (aka "overweight") than "obesity" (if I had to choose between the two), while "obesity" means being overweight to a greater degree.  I didn't know if the persons who added "corpulence" and "corpulent" were intending for this word to mean "overweight" or "obese," but I decided to err on the side of just plain "overweight" rather than "obesity."

Does that make sense, and do you agree with that thought process?

Do you? Apparently not.

@Peter_pbn I'm honestly confused by your question.

In layman's terms, being obese is different from being fat or overweight. Obese means being "very fat" or "very overweight."

There is a medically defined difference:

"If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls within the healthy weight range. If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obesity range."
All obese people are fat and/or overweight, but not all fat and/or overweight people are obese.
I agree with the merger of "fat" (also often a derogatory word) with "overweight" (non-derogatory), but "obesity" should remain a separate keyword.
Sydney Greenstreet was an "overweight-man," but the Brendan Fraser character in The Whale suffers from "obesity."

I agree. Thank you for the feedback.
