Duplicate Keywords - List #59 ("american-" & "u.s." keywords) (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion)

Here is the next installment of my lists of proposed keywords for permanent merger and auto-conversion.

I am posting this list for fellow contributors to review first and raise any objections or questions. I will wait at least 28 days before changing this post to a "problem" post and asking IMDb staff to make the proposed changes.

The mergers and auto-conversions should be made in the direction of the arrows.

I think united-states-flag is way better than american-flag as a specific term. As many people will point out america is two continents, not a country.

Looks like the semi-official name is the "flag of the United States of America" or "flag of the United States."

Even though "flag-of-the-united-states" would be parallel with other keywords like "president-of-the-united-states," that would be quite a mouthful.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_States

The national flag of the United States of America, often referred to as the American flag or the U.S. flag, consists of

For what it's worth, on that Wikipedia page the term "american flag" occurs 42 times, the term "u.s. flag" occurs 38 times, the term "flag of the United States" occurs 22 times, and the term "united states flag" occurs 18 times.

Rather than "united-states-flag," it should be "u.s.-flag," which will make it consistent with other similar keywords involving the U.S. government. I will make that change to the list.

Personally, I hate shortening keywords from "united states" to "u.s.". I also hated the change from "television news" to "tv news"..

I know, but it's impossible to satisfy all individual contributors' personal preferences simultaneously.

Your response did remind me of the past merger of "tv-news-reporter" into "television-reporter," and that got me further thinking about the keyword "news-reporter."

I believe "news-reporter" should probably be merged into "reporter." After all, don't all reporters report news?
