Duplicate Keywords - List #56 (misc. keywords) (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion)

Here is the next installment of my lists of proposed keywords for permanent merger and auto-conversion.

IMDb has recently changed its display format for keyword search results. The changes will hamper my ability to post these lists in the familiar format as shown below. For the time being, I am still able to access the old version of the keyword search results by logging out of my IMDb account. In anticipation of losing the old version forever, I hope to post several lists this weekend. So as not to overwhelm anyone, I will double the standard 14-day comment period to 28 days, to allow the community sufficient time to review this list before it is finalized.

I am posting this list for fellow contributors to review first and raise any objections or questions. I will wait at least 28 days before changing this post to a "problem" post and asking IMDb staff to make the proposed changes.

The mergers and auto-conversions should be made in the direction of the arrows.

In a past discussion on this page, it was decided that "rock-'n'-roll" was the preferred keyword.  That decision was apparently never enforced.

rock-music is too general, and can include ALL kinds of rock, i.e punk-rock, pop-rock, alternative-rock, hillbilly-rock, etc.

Also, I'm not sure that ANY judgement of profanity should be included in keywords.  Despite movie rating systems, this is VERY subjective and personal and time specific.  To me, one of the most profane movies ever made was The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965).  Let us remember that some considered Gone With the Wind (1939) profane because Rhett tells Scarlet, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!"  And to a Muslim, any mention of Mohammed may be considered profane.    A Christian may feel the same way about many uses of the word "God." Let's leave questions of morality to user reviews, and let keywords just record the facts without opinions about those facts.

If a specific title is ABOUT profanity, the it would be a valid keyword.  Otherwise, I would delete all these moralistic keywords.  When it comes to keywords, as Sgt. Joe Friday said, "Just the facts, Ma'am, nothing but the facts."

It's precisely because "rock-music" is the more general keyword that this is the direction in which the merger should be made. Besides, I don't know that there is such a thing as music that qualifies as "rock-'n'-roll" and yet would not also qualify as "rock-music."

As for the "profanity" keywords, I completely agree with you that the keywords should be off-limits for this sort of thing, but for different reasons. My first reason is that IMDb already has a Parents Guide page for each title, where contributors can indicate, with as much detail as they like, things like profanities, including the use of the f-word, c-word, b-word, etc.

And on top of that, my second reason is that using the keyword section for that sort of thing turns keyword pages into transcripts, which I am very much against. That's why there should not be keywords like "calling-someone-a-bitch," "character-says-bitch," "woman-slur," "b-word," "c-word," "vagina-slur," etc. People should put that sort of stuff in the Parents Guide, not in the keywords.

But as long as these keywords exist, I'm not willing to push for the nuclear option of completely banning them. My intent with this list is to at least organize and clean the keywords up a bit through consolidation.

If other contributors would like to go through and "audit" titles by deleting keywords like "profanity" and "f-word," then by all means they should go ahead.

I can only think of a few titles where "f-word," for example, belongs in the keywords--where the f-word is a notable plot device that moves the plot forward. The mere fact that someone uses this word in a movie or show does not belong in the keywords. But alas, it is a very popular keyword, and I am not willing to recommend permanently banning it. And the same goes with the generic "profanity" keyword.

I don't think rock'n'roll should be merged with rock-music and removed from the database. "Rock'n'roll" is mostly used about a more specific style.

https://www.britannica.com/art/rock-and-roll-early-style-of-rock-music

When you acknowledge that rock-music is "more general", you are also saying that they are not necessarily synonymous. In other discussions you have often said keywords should not be merged if they are not synonyms, "true duplicates" or similar.

@Peter_pbn That link convinced me. I will adjust accordingly.

multiple-personality is grammatically a bit odd - what is the reason to prefer it?

@Peter_pbn It felt weird to me too, and I originally drafted that one to merge into "multiple-personalities," but decided instead to go with "multiple-personality," primarily because of this dictionary definition:

multiple personality, Psychiatry.
a rare disorder in which an individual displays several functionally dissociated personalities, each of a complexity comparable to that of a normal individual.
Also called split personality.

In other words, "multiple personality" (not even "multiple personality disorder") is the official psychiatric term. Or at least it seems that way according to the dictionary.

@Peter_pbn

p.s. I looked it up online, and apparently "multiple personality disorder" has been officially renamed "dissociative identity disorder."

https://aamft.org/Consumer_Updates/Dissociative_Identity_Disorder.aspx

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dissociative-disorders/symptoms-causes/syc-20355215

Given that, seems like there is less of a need to equate "multiple-personality" with the disorder itself.

I wonder if these mergers should be reorganized like this?

split-personality (433 titles)  -->  multiple-personality (135 titles)  -->  multiple-personalities (60 titles)

multiple-personality-disorder (196 titles)  -->  dissociative-personality-disorder (7 titles)  -->  dissociative-identity-disorder (108 titles)

In fact, I found at least one title that currently has the keyword "multiple-personality-disorder" but where the keyword "multiple-personalities" should have been used instead:

25. Virtuosity (1995)

R | 106 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

When a virtual reality simulation created using the personalities of multiple serial killers manages to escape into the real world, an ex-cop is tasked with stopping its reign of terror.

@Peter_pbn I revised the list to this for now:

multiple-personality-disorder (196 titles)  -->  dissociative-personalities (2 titles)  -->  dissociative-personality-disorder (7 titles)

two-personalities (7 titles)  -->  double-personality (12 titles)  -->  dual-personality (64 titles)
