Duplicate Keywords - List #4.1 (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion) (april fool's joke)

Here is the next installment of my lists of proposed keywords for permanent merger and auto-conversion.

I am posting this for fellow contributors to review first and raise any objections or questions. I will wait at least seven days before changing this post to a "problem" post and asking IMDb staff to make the proposed changes.

The mergers and auto-conversions should be made in the direction of the arrows.

Don't know how you can merge "character-says-" IF it is an actual quote of what a character says?  If only one word is different in the quote, that makes it a different quote.

Still think that all "character-says-" keywords should be deleted.  This sort of info belongs in "Quotes."  Again, more duplication.

I don't think there's any complaint about converting plurals (jokes), as they're really only appropriate when you're dealing with something that always comes in multiples (binoculars, trousers, eyeglasses, handcuffs, twins); I think you got the bad-jokes conversion backward, though.

I think 'cinephilia' (84 titles) is a better choice than those you suggested. And 'self-referential' seems OK.

I'd be VERY cautious about converting 'spring' automatically, as there are a variety of related terms with different meanings (water-spring, hot-spring, coil-spring, etc.); I have long hoped that the submission system would provide various options for vague keywords.

I agree with the earlier response about 'character-says' keywords; there's a quote search option, and the usage here results in a host of ridiculously specific keywords.

As for 'tricking', 'deception' is probably a good alternative in many cases (it seems the less benign 'deceit' has largely vanished for some reason).

Vague keywords like 'word' are always a problem, as they lend themselves to rampant overuse. After all, almost every title has words; something more precise is advisable. Same goes for 'title'. (I could go off on the topic of writing credits with the attribute (words), but that's another issue.)

I don't have a problem with 'data', as the singular 'datum' is rarely used.

Each of the 'goof'-related keywords seems an awkward substitute for something more self-explanatory; are we talking about bloopers, filmmaking mistakes, or errors by characters?

The more basic 'april-fool's-day' seems reasonable enough to me, since it seems to already imply some sort of prank or joke, but I suppose adding '-prank' wouldn't be a big deal.

A few of the others ('duplication', 'post') also fall into the category of vague keywords with potentially multiple meanings.

@bradley_kent @gary_krause_dsb3tl1xamjcb

Thank you for weighing in on this extremely important list of duplicate keywords on this important day.

Just so you know, I developed the list based on the keywords of this title:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047358/reference/

Edit: The full film from where these keywords were obtained is highly recommended and can be viewed here:

I believe this would apply:

joke-going-over-everyone's-head

@Peter_pbn Shouldn't that be merged with don't-get-the-joke?

Hi keyword_expert -

I have applied all the Keyword merges and auto-conversions except for a few of the following, as I wanted some additional clarity on the requests -

character-says-this-is-not-a-joke (1 title)   -->  character-says-it's-all-a-joke (1 title)

It seems these are two separate phrases, one saying "this is not a joke" and the other saying "it's all a joke".  Since they have separate meanings I have now not merged these, however, let me know if you have additional thoughts.

april-fools-day-hoax (2 titles) -->  april-fools-day-prank (8 titles)  -->  april-fools-day-joke (5 titles) -->  april-fool's-day-special (1 title)

I can see the purpose of merging the first three, however, I'm not certain that they should be merged into "april-fool's-day-special" as "special" doesn't seem to be the same as a hoax/prank/joke.  If you have additional thoughts on this one let me know!

Cheers!

If this is, in fact, an April Fools' Day joke, it is a blatant abuse of the Data Issues & Policy Discussions page, and the IMDb staff should take appropriate action in response to the original poster.

I take everything that i post here as serious, and I respond and participate in kind.  This is not a place fpr jokes, but for serous-minded people who, like me, work to help make IMDb as factual and truthful as possible.  No kidding!

Thank you to IMDb staff for undoing the requested mergers. I have now finished cleaning up these keywords and restored them as close as possible to their original state.

This thread can now be marked as solved and closed. Thanks again.
