Solved

Do "version of" media connections automatically interconnect to all other connected versions?

Dear staff,

Because of the massive current The Odyssey publicity campaign, I decided to have some 'orphaned' titles of the same source material connected as versions: The Return (2024), with Ralph Fiennes, Franco Piavoli's Nostos: Il ritorno (1989) , and the TV series from producer ARTE Odysseus (2013), all of which concentrate on the painful psychological and personal homecoming (i.e. family reunion) aspect. But as I see that the 2013 ARTE series is already linked as a version of Homer's epic to other well-known adaptations, like Ulysses (1954) with Kirk Douglas, The Odyssey (1997) with Armand Assante, and Odissea (1968) from RAI TV with Bekim Fehmiu, to what extent do my recent submissions also propagate (automatically?) to the other version connections?

It looks they already do to some extent, as it seems superfluous to reconnect Nolan's The Odyssey to every single one of the titles based on the Homer epic.

Regards,

Richard

P.S. Please remove or adapt the requirement for 'version of' connections from the Guidelines and the IMDb Contact Form:

The "Reason" box should be used to explain how both films are connected. These reasons will be published on the site, so be clear, concise and specific when explaining the connection. Keep in mind that for simple connections the reason will be used for both directions (i.e. references/referenced in) and for complex connections potentially for the whole group. For example, a common reason for a version connection follows the pattern "Based on the novel/play/etc (title) by (author)" so it works for all titles in a group.

as it is obvious no reason for any version connection is published on IMDb. Which I think is a pity by the way, provided it gets properly regulated or moderated.

Hi Richard_J-

Thank you for the feedback! So for "Complex Connections" such as this one for The Odyssey, yes, they will automatically be connected to all grouped titles for "versions of.'

As per the request for the Help Guide, we will pass this along to the respective team to review.

Cheers!

@Maya Thank you! Yet this automatic linking doesn't appear to be the case. Ik looks like the interconnection gets stuck somewhere in the process. For instance, the ARTE TV series "Odysseus" (2013) (tt2141869) is currently linked to movie "The Return" (2024) with Ralph Fiennes (tt19861162), and 8 other versions, but The Return itself just connects to the ARTE TV series Odysseus (2013), and "Nostos: il ritorno" (1989) (tt0100271).

"Nostos: il ritorno" itself even just has one version connection, to "The Return".

And Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey", while it appears once in the version list with the Kirk Douglas, Armand Assante and Italian Bekim Fehmiu adaptations, as a title entry only links up with this "The Odyssey (TV Mini Series 1968)".

So, even though I fail to understand this procedure, could it be that the processing of the 'deeper' links can simply take a few weeks before they show up?

And why are nearly all version links sorted in default chronological order, but the Nolan version for instance appears on top?

@Richard_J

For what it's worth I submitted a version-of link between Wuthering Heights (2026) and Wuthering Heights (2011), and the existing links for the latter also appeared on the former's page:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt32897959/movieconnections/

In the email I mentioned that "The 2026 movie should be connected in the same way that earlier titles are" and linked to

@Peter_pbn Thanks for the support, Peter! At the moment, it does appear that the link-through process sometimes gets stuck at the mutual (two-way) link a contributor specifies, and sometimes automatically links through to all previously connected versions. Waiting for a staff examination of this phenomenon.

Interesting also that all versions of Wuthering Heights share the description of "Based on same novel", while none of the Odyssey versions do - which may be partly my mistake in a few cases (but then I should have been informed before approval).

P.S. I just noticed that Chrstopher Nolan's The Odyssey is now also tagged by a contributor as a 'remake' of the 1997 TV mini-series with Armand Assante:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt33764258/movieconnections

I don't think this is right in this case. Disney 'live action' remakes of their previous animations, yes, Gus Van Sant's take on Hitchcock's Psycho, obviously yes, but Nolan never set out to remake the Hallmark TV series as far as we know! Another classification to argue about, to avoid the occurrence of every traditional, classic text (fairy tale/myth, iconic Dickens or Sherlock Holmes novels, etc.) in both connections.

@Richard_J

Agreed regarding "remake"; I think that's why "version of" exists in the first place.

It actually also applies to "follows" connections when there is a chain of connected sequels that the whole chain is not always displayed. It seems the staff can toggle it somehow.

@Maya Regardless of awaiting more general policy or guidelines decisions on this topic, I wish I could just interconnect the relatively well-known versions of the Odyssey for the moment, as they are all indirectly linked anyway. And add a descriptive tag "Based on Homer's epic poem" to them, the way @Peter_pbn suggested all dramatizations of Wuthering Heights are already uniformly tagged "Based on same novel".

@Richard_J  This a clear case of a “version of” connection so there’s no policy to decide.  We have flagged the missing connections to the appropriate team again so hopefully the complete linkage will be added soon.  I am unsure what the delay can have been.

@Col_Needham Thank you for your prompt reply! There is a general issue with the guidelines, however, in that the reason why a contributor submits two titles as versions hasn't been enforced in practice, and there is no specified formal format.

From the IMDb contact form:

"Reason: Explain how both titles are connected (IMPORTANT: this reason will be published on the site so please be clear, concise and specific when explaining the connection)"

This is why we have all the versions of e.g. Oliver Twist  with the same description "based on the same novel":

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040662/movieconnections/

just like Tess of the D'Urbervilles:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1186342/movieconnections

but none for David Copperfield:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167872/movieconnections

Nor for Quo Vadis:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043949/movieconnections

This lack of consistency must have confused a lot of contributors (including me), but also your staff, wondering how far they could take the 'version of' connections with no clear proof or reason.

Which to me has led to the haphazard connections we find for the Odyssey.

Richard

Hi Richard,

I have updated the title connections for the above mentioned titles.

The Odyssey: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33764258/movieconnections/?ref_=tt_dyk_cnn#version_of

David Copperfield: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167872/movieconnections/#version_of

Quo Vadis: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043949/movieconnections/#version_of

Thank you for your support. Have a good day!

@_Anna_ Thank you very much, Anna! This is most welcome!

Generally speaking, I wish contributors from now on could be compelled to provide a good, concise reason for their version connections (as well as the other title connections), which will also, as a rule, be published in line with the existing explanations.

I believe this will help avoiding future ambiguity or confusion for contributors and IMDb staff alike, and thus save us work.

Best regards,

Richard
