Director trademarks not displayed
I noticed on a film's trivia page that this item was in the update form but not displayed on the trivia page:
DIRTRADE([link=nm0000005]): Theatre companies.
At first I edited it as follows, which didn't seem to help:
DIRTRADE([link=nm0000005]): [Theatre companies]
Then I added an explanation, and now the item is displayed:
DIRTRADE([link=nm0000005]): [theatre companies] Theatre and its staff featured.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083922/trivia/
I found the same item in the update form for this title, where it is still not displayed and I haven't added the explanation:
DIRTRADE([link=nm0000005]): [theatre companies]
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087193/trivia/
The trivia guidelines say the explanation is optional:
DIRTRADE([link=nm######]): [trademark keyword]: optional explanation
DIRTRADE([link=nm######]): [flying]: the last scene of the film takes place on a hot air balloon
DIRTRADE([link=nm######]): [shooting on film, not digital]
I wonder if there are many other items that are not displayed.

Hi, Peter:
It's hard to tell from our end since now the contributor datasets (.tsv files) are generated a posteriori (based on the information that’s actually displayed on the page), unlike before 2018, when the old text archives (.list files) were generated directly from the core of the database (raw data), allowing for more in-depth analysis (e.g., to identify errors or inconsistencies like the one you’re reporting).
In fact, all those invisible items you're talking about don't appear in the latest title.trivia.tsv file, but they could indeed be tracked down in trivia.list with a bit of skill.
Obviously, the numbers have changed dramatically, but there's a curious surprise. Let's compare:
It is quite interesting that over the past 8 years, the number of trivia entries has increased by 142%, but the number of DIRTRADE entries has grown by only 16%, meaning that while they previously accounted for 0.2% of the total (20 in every 10,000 entries), they now represent only 9 in every 10,000 entries.
I can only think of two reasons for this change:
Focusing specifically on those entries that are hidden because they are formatted incorrectly, let’s analyze the 1,700 items up to 2018 (as I mentioned, anything "invisible" entry after that isn’t included in the text files), and to do so, we first need to remember the correct syntax for a DIRTRADE entry.
Here is the breakdown of the data:
I haven't checked them all, but, to my surprise, a small number have since been corrected, so most of them are still stored (visible in edit mode), yet they are not displayed on their respective trivia pages.
Therefore, to answer Peter's question, an estimate that about 10% of the entries are hidden might be more or less accurate.
Cheers! 😊
