direct vs. indirect sequel

Can direct sequels be distinguished from indirect ones?  By "direct sequels", I'm referring to those that follow the prequel's plot.  By "indirect sequels", I'm referring to those with plots unconnected to the prequel.  Their indirect connection is thematic or conceptual (within the same conceptual universe).

Thanks for posting this.

This relationship can be specified using the connection section on a title page as indicated here:

But follows/followed by connections are not submitted via the standard contribution form, so "reason box" does not apply.

They have to be submitted by the email form.

Note: Currently, new complex connections can only be submitted via the help site contact form through the path IMDb Contributor / I need help and haven't submited an update / Titles / update complex connections. The same applies to deletions or modification of existing complex connections.

The contact form does prompt a reason:

Please provide the following information, as applicable:

Title 1 link:
Title 2 link:
Type of connection (Followed by/Follows, Version of, Alternative language version of):
Reason: Explain how both titles are connected (IMPORTANT: this reason will be published on the site so please be clear, concise and specific when explaining the connection):

Why are you requesting this update? (please be as detailed as possible - if you are requesting a change to an existing connection please call out exactly which one you are referring to):

Ok @forthehorde, I asked because I also haven't found an example of any reason published.  But I assume that doesn't mean examples don't exist for sequels.  (For example, the Discworld universe's indirect sequels should have a reason for their connection.)

Before, when 'follows' connections were submitted in the form, the reasons were also not published  even though they were required. And many such explanations are unnecessary because they are very obvious. This is something I submitted in 2016:

The Oscars (2015) (TV)

Movie Connections - Add

Type: followed by
Other: The Oscars (2016) (TV)
Reason: Following year's show.

And going back before that I don't think these reasons were required.

Anyway, your suggestion in this thread was not very clear. If you wish, you could develop it a bit and post an idea thread.

Do you mean that this distinction should be used by IMDb? In the movie connections section?

Or perhaps this is a job for keywords?
