Difference between "filmed by" and "photography" credits

This is a question about film-making terminology and how credits should be entered in IMDB.

In a TV documentary (*) that consists mainly of talking-heads interviews, linking scene-setting shots, and archive news reports from several decades ago, the on-screen credits list three names under the heading "Photography" and one as "Series Produced, Directed and Filmed by". Obviously the last is three separate entries for the same person, in Producer, Director and either Camera or Cinematographer sections. But should that person, and the three for "Photography", all go in the same section (eg all in Cinematographer, or all in Camera), or should they be split (eg "Filmed by" in Cinematographer and "Photography" in Camera)?

Could it be that the producer/director had a creative hand in composing and lighting the interviews (a "director of photography" role), with the "Photographer" crew doing the actual operation of the camera?

So far, I've added all the credits (with attributes "filmed by" and "photography") in the Cinematographer section, but I'm wondering whether this is right.

Martin,

In my opinion, this is correct.

Are there any other names listed in the credits as either a director of photography or a cinematographer?

If not, then consider the persons listed with the multiple job title (Series Produced, Directed and Filmed by) as a Cinematography credit with the term "filmed by" in the attribute section.

I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any more questions.

There is no DoP or Cinematographer credit: the "filmed by" and "photography" credits are the only camera-related ones.

So you're suggesting moving the "photography" credits to the camera department (with attribute=photography)? OK, that makes a clear distinction. I'll do them tomorrow.

Thanks for your advice. Choosing the right section based on the job titles that are on-screen is not always straightforward.

The credits should be submitted this way in this specific case.

"Filmed by" credit - Cinematography Department

"Photography" credit - Camera Department

As you mentioned, there is no one listed in the credits as a director of photography or cinematographer.

Submissions for other projects may be different. It all depends on how the names are assigned to each job title.

Thanks for writing back.
