Solved

Hello Djoulz,

Upon taking a look at the release dates page for Nitro, the first release date displaying is from Canada June 29, 2007(Québec). Can you help me taking a look at your site? if still with issues please post a screen shot for us to take a look.

@Fran Main title page shows the first wide release date, since that 2012 one is the only wide release listed, it shows that.

@Fran I see a (DVD premiere) attribute was added to that 2012 Korean date and this thread was silently marked Solved. Did you add that attribute? The question is: Why? How was it decided it was for a DVD release not for a theatrical release, did you verify it? Or just assumed?

When I had a look for that, the sources I found was indicating that South Korea date was for a theatrical release:

http://www.ggilbo.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=67364

https://www.maxmovie.com/movie/M000075739

https://movie.daum.net/moviedb/contents?movieId=45081

DVD release is indicated at a later date (1, 2)

Why incorrect data is added without verifying it?

@mbmb I added the attribute, but it was not unverified. I found no evidence of a wide theatrical release in South Korea, some five years after the original release, especially because we ought to have the South Korean theatrical grosses on https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0790602/ if it had a wide release there.

The 2012 South Korean release date was added to IMDb some 18-months afterwards in late 2013 and since (a) the release date forms at the time would often lead to such confusion and (b) the movie went direct to DVD everywhere else, I did assume it was a DVD release.

I did not find the sources you have and I only have machine translations of the links you provided. Did I miss something on those pages which confirms this was a theatrical release or do these sites only cover theatrical releases?

Perhaps @Djoulz can confirm how the movie was released in South Korea?

@Col_Needham Thanks for the reply and sorry for saying unverified. These pages have theatrical posters and the articles say "opening day" which would be used for a theatrical release. Movies listed on ggilbo article are theatrical releases of the week with theatrical posters and it uses the phrase "opening day" for all of them. And poster for that February release has a different distributor info and logo (Sonamu Pictures) and a theatrical tagline while DVD cover has another distributor (Media Hub) with DVD logos and without the tagline. Also "Korea Media Rating Board" site is returning a certificate issued on 2012-02-21 for "Sonamu Pictures" and another on 2012-03-28 for "Media Hub" (which is consistent with the 19 April 2012 date stated for the DVD release on yes24 store page). These were the indications for me February date was for a theatrical release.

But while looking for information about the distributor on the theatrical poster, Sonamu Pictures, I learned some interesting things. It looks like there's a common business practice in South Korea aimed at increasing the value of a movie when it's sold to video/OTT market because apparently films with theatrical releases are being sold at a higher price than those without theatrical releases.

This wiki page has a very detailed overview of it and there is an article here and both mention this company as one of the main actors of this business practice. As I understand it, they advertise it as it will have a wide release, prepare posters and trailers, send press releases, but in the end it either only gets a release for a day or two in a few small theaters or doesn't even get any showings at all. They just do it to sell it at a higher price to VOD market. I think that was likely the case with this movie. It seems to have even caught the attention of politicians, and there are statements about the need to do something about it, as this article indicates: https://www.seoul.co.kr/news/newsView.php?id=20221004021010

So I'm sure that advertised February date was for a theatrical release but either it didn't happen at all or it was one or two screenings with few people for only a day or two so I agree with you that it most likely wasn't a wide release if it happened at all.

I'd like to change that item to 19 April 2012 because of all the above, as this is a verified DVD release date as indicated by this store page: : https://www.yes24.com/Product/Goods/6689508

@mbmb  Thanks for the detailed research (and what a backstory).  Agreed on changing the date — the new one is now live.
