Correcting primary title of 'Wife of a Spy'

The primary title of Wife of a Spy (Supai no tsuma) should, in my understanding of IMDb's policies, be corrected from the current Wife of a Spy (2020) to Supai no tsuma (2020) (TV).

I have tried to correct the title through the edit form on 21 January 2021 (contribution № 210121-184402-758000), but, four months later, the submission has still not been accepted.

As I was successful in getting the primary title of Earwig and the Witch (Āya to majo) corrected through a post on the Sprinklr community, I am now trying to do the same for Wife of a Spy.

First of all, the movie was originally produced for release on TV, specifically on the  NHK BS8K channel, and this is why it was shot in 4320p at 60 fps and shown on TV with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.7̇:1), as shown in the movie's Technical Specifications. In addition, the first public showing of this Japanese production in its country of origin was on TV, on 6 June 2020, as shown in its Release Info. This same TV premiere date is also given on NHK's website. This was months before the world premiere of the reworked, theatrical version, on 8 September 2020 in Venice.

So, considering IMDb's policy on Title formatting, the title needs to have the attribute (TV). In addition, according to the Release dates policies, the TV premiere date of 6 June 2020 should not have any attribute, and the Japanese and other theatrical release dates should have the attribute (theatrical release). But, in order to correct those, the title attribute needs to be corrected first.

I wasn't sure for a while whether the TV and the theatrical versions of the movie should count as two separate movies on IMDb. Having now read IMDb's policy on Alternate versions and considering that the theatrical version has effectively replaced the TV version (only the theatrical version has been released on home video, and there is now no way to see the TV one unless you were in Japan when it was broadcast and recorded it), I'm pretty sure they count as being one movie, despite their many differences (the theatrical version has the resolution downscaled to 2K, the frame rate dropped to 24 fps, the aspect ratio cropped to 1.85:1, the colour timing done anew and the audio downmixed to 5.1 channels from the original 22.2).

This brings me to the other change that I think the primary title needs, which is to the title itself.

It is possible that the on-screen title in the opening credits of the theatrical version is Wife of a Spy. I haven't seen this movie yet myself, but I've seen enough Japanese theatrical movies to know that it's not uncommon for them to have opening title sequences completely in English and only have the Japanese title and Japanese-language credits in the ending titles.

However, because the TV version is the original one, it is what is on screen in the TV version's opening titles that decides what the primary title is, according to IMDb policy as I understand it ("We use the original title of a movie/show in its original language as it appears on screen in the opening credits."). Considering the many changes to the theatrical version, and particularly the new colour timing and that it will need to credit the theatrical distributor, the theatrical version must have different on-screen titles compared to the TV version (the theatrical version is also a minute longer – 115 min instead of 114 min – which could be just a difference in rounding, but it might be because the credits are longer, to include the additional staff and the theatrical distributor's ident).

Finding out what the on-screen title in the opening credits of the TV version is is a bit of a problem, however, because the only way one could see the TV version now would be if they had a recording of a TV broadcast of it. Which I do not, and I doubt that any IMDb users do.

That being the case, all we can go on is related evidence. NHK's website states that the title of the TV version is スパイの妻, and the title on-screen in the trailer for the TV version is スパイの妻. Though I know it is not reliable evidence in itself, the Japanese Wikipedia article for the movie claims that the TV version is titled only スパイの妻 (while the theatrical version has Wife of a Spy on screen).

I have also seen quite a few Japanese TV dramas, and (in contrast to Japanese movies made for theatrical release) all those I've seen have opening title sequences in Japanese, never in English.

So, based on all the above, I think it is highly probable that the on-screen title in the opening credits of the original, TV version is スパイの妻, not Wife of a Spy. Therefore, the primary title should be the revised Hepburn romanisation of スパイの妻, which is Supai no tsuma. With the correct attributes added, that results in Supai no tsuma (2020) (TV).
