Correcting order of credits for HoD technical roles such as editor

Hey all - I'd like to open up a discussion around having a ranked order for HoD and lead technical roles (editor, cinematographer, production designer etc) in a similar way to how you can force a ranked order of cast rather than just alphabetical.

I worked on a film where there are three editor credits. I'm the top credited editor on the film. Legally my name has to appear first on the billing block, credits, all advertising materials etc. But on IMDB due to the alphabetisation I get the lowest ranked position, just due to my surname starting letter. This is causing real issues around perception around who did what on the film.

I know that the current design of IMDB does not allow this. But we're able to do it in the cast section so it could be made possible with some back end tweaks.

I feel that this would be a good addition to ensure that the information on the site is as accurate as possible.

In an ideal world we want the information on the site to 100% reflect the credit data.

Thanks for your time.

Name "first" on (e.g.) the editor list doesn't really mean anything. It's just three names anyways. It's the job title/description on the credits that matter the most.

IMO, the main problem here (based on your post, I assume that you were the "main editor"?) is that the production company didn't add your name (in the credits) as "editor" (which goes under "Film Editing" section in IMDB) and the other two names as "additonal editing" (which would put them under "Editorial Department" in IMDB rather than under "FIlm Editing").

Quite frankly this is not the problem that IMDB somehow created, let alone that they made some kind of mistake. If your contract says that you're the "main editor", then it should've been noted in the credits.

I disagree.

All three editors deserve the full "editor" credit that they have received. Order is very important. If your argument we're true then why isn't the cast section alphabetised?

I'm certainly not blaming IMDB. I'm trying to improve the accuracy of the data. Yes this is for personal gain, but there are others who have requested this feature (see links below). I feel that all sections should be able to be ordered. That way they IMDB data will be the truest reflection of the credits.

And isn't that IMDB is about?

If all three editors deserve the full "editor" credit that they have received, I don't personally see what the problem is. Again, IMO these decisions should come from the production company before the credits are finalized. Being "first" doesn't really mean anything if all receive the same (non-acting) credit.

But I let the official IMDB team to chime in.

I think that what Luke is on about is having all the cast and crew able to be numbered exactly in the same order as they are shown at the end of the film credits. So regardless of what alphabetical order your name is at you can alter it to reflect the same order as on the film credits.

Exactly.

I'd love to hear what the official IMDB team have to say. I think this would be an improvement to what is already a great site.

There's weeks of shuffling that goes on with the credits. The hierarchy of all names is carefully considered and are placed in that specific order for a reason. I think being able to do the same on the IMDB site would be a big improvement.

Don't hold your breath, a numbering system for crew will not be a high priority.

yeah thats the spirit. Come on... The code is already there. We can do it with cast. Lets make IMDB the best it can be and 100% reflect the credit roll. Wikipedia allows this and so should IMDB. I'm a crew member and this matters.
