Character Credit - Special Guest

If an on screen main/end credit for a fiction TV show, where a person is appearing as a fictional version of themself, uses the character credit "Special Guest" as the credited role -- is it better to list the character on IMDB as "Special Guest" just like the actual screen credit, or is it better to credit the role using the persons actual name, as spoken in their appearance during the content of the show?

Hi @WillArms - In that case when someone is playing a scripted, fictional version of themselves, we use the performer's name as the character name to avoid moving the credit to the 'Self' category. Visit our help guides for more. Cheers!

Hi Bethanny, Thanks for your response. I'm still not sure if I'm understanding. I followed the recommendations just like you describe - avoiding a 'self' credit - when I submitted the entry here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt30395141/?ref_=ttep_ep2 but after that I was able to obtain access to the actual screen credits and saw that the actual on screen credit is "Special Guest" as you can see here. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rSWTrSKjVvkvIgc8MUPvH9XKxCIj0SQq/view?usp=drive_link I understand the distinctions of "self" credits, on a pure non-fiction interview vs. a scripted (or semi scripted) version of themselves in a fictional format. I'm just not clear on if that supersceeds the on screen credit of "Special Guest". I need to make sure I understand, because eventually I will be submitting entries for all 65 episodes of the sister series the original The Secret City (1985) and there are dozens of Special Guests who will fall under the same situation over there, such as Joan Boccino (already entered as Special Guest) here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt28337436/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3 and, not yet entered Al Grosso as seen in the opening scene and closing credits of this episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd3rFiYvzIU&list=PLauIXa5BkQex40FLWJlOl9dWNP4DhZ9AA any additional input is most appreciated! -Will

@WillArms  Special Guest is a designation much like Starring and Co-Starring.

My question is "is it correct or incorrect to list the Secret City Special Guest's and Club Members as if their character names are "Special Guest" and "Club Member" since that is how the screen credits list them, as if they were a Character Credit for their semi-fictional appearances." I understand that it can be used that way when a person is appearing as themselves in a purely non-fictions setting, such as a talk show or awards show, where it would warrant a 'Self' credit on IMDB. I'm still unclear how it impacts the IMDB credit for a 'fictional' version of themselves where "Special Guest" is the only listed "Character Credit" for a fictional version of themselves. Sorry to question it so much, but The Secret City (1985) and New Secret City Adventures (1991) walk a very particular, peculiar line of being a fictional sci-fi/fantasy setting with a few clearly fictional characters, and also a regular cast of semi-scripted, semi-fictional versions of themselves going by their own names - but routinely interacting with fantasy elements of the show (like Al Grosso's interactions with Cindy the Dragon). Clearly the 'real' Al Grosso did not have a 'real' interaction with a 'real' dragon -- so the entire interaction is a work of fiction. But he identifies himself with his real name, and he reacts to the fantasy elements very much the way he would if it were happening 'in real life'. A great example of the fine line the show walks is real life club member Roland, who is sometimes delivering a totally non-fiction interview biography of himself, like we see here: https://youtu.be/QaysIOxYyHs?si=ueKUx-7iZlEAo1db&t=242 99% of the time the club members' speaking parts are extemporaneous, honest responses to questions from adults about whatever drawing or project they are working on -- BUT occasionally they are delivering scripted, purely fictional dialogue, in response to whatever fictional scenario is taking place in that day's episode, like when Roland responds to a help request he receives here: https://youtu.be/tPDqJ629Z_Q?si=vSPmwdvl_fhdTVVb&t=726 Club members all receive only the "Club Member" or "Secret City Club Member" designation in on screen credits, and I am intending to enter all of their credits that way, as "Character Credit" entries, such as: Mark Kistler  --  Commander Mark Joel Gori  --  Cindy/MetaMan/Zebtron Roland Taylor  -- Secret City Club Member as seen here: https://youtu.be/tPDqJ629Z_Q?si=XMEdYEvhRfxuAG-4&t=1328 -Will

@WillArms  It's incorrect. I'm not sure how that isn't clear. Just like you would list some as "Starring" as a character name, you wouldn't list "Special Guest" as the character name. On the other hand, "Club Member" is a valid character description.
