Changing a name can cause a problem
I think IMDB has a problem when it changes the names of individuals without examining their credits carefully.
For example
Felix Mendelssohn – nm0006196
For some time, Felix Mendelssohn appeared on IMDB under the name ‘Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’.
I was mystified by this because to me he had always been simply ‘Felix Mendelssohn’. When I learnt music that was the name I knew him under. I accepted that IMDB had a reason(s) for this and used that form of his name.
When I added links to Soundtrack items where he was just ‘Felix Mendelssohn’, I had to add an attribute to indicate this i.e.
Written by [link=nm0006196] (as Felix Mendelssohn)
Today, I noted that his name is no longer of the form, ‘Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’, but is now ‘Felix Mendelssohn’. All his credits have now changed to ‘Felix Mendelssohn’. This is a strength of the system in that by changing the name attached to a code, all instances of that code anywhere in the data reflect the change.
In my opinion, this creates a major problem in terms of IMDB’s quest for accuracy.
To explain, I will use an example.
Note: an inherent assumption in what follows is that whoever entered the Soundtrack item originally did so accurately.
Two years I submitted an edit of a Soundtrack item in which I added the link to ‘Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’.
Ref no. #180402-124144-267000
Old - Text: "Violin Concerto - Andante" Written by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
New - Text: "Violin Concerto - Andante" Written by [link=nm0006196]
Explanation: Adding link
The changed item would have appeared like so
Violin Concerto - Andante
Written by Felix Mendelssoh-Bartholdy
Now it appears like this
Violin Concerto - Andante
Written by Felix Mendelssohn
There is no longer any indication that the on-screen credit was given to ‘Felix Mendelssohn–Bartholdy’.
It should appear like this
Violin Concerto - Andante
Written by Felix Mendelssohn (as Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy)
IMDB always states that it reflects accurately and exactly what appears on the screen.
In this case it no longer does.
And I am sure there would be other instances of this amongst Mendelssohn’s credits, and it would have happened for other artists as well.
Comments?
Addendum:
If the above is accurate, every credit for 'Felix Mendelssohn' must now be given the attribute '(as Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy)' as that is what it would have been before the change, except for the credits where there exists the attribute, '(as Felix Mendelssohn)'. These attributes must be removed as the credits now read, for example,
Written by Felix Mendelssohn (as Felix Mendelssohn)

I wish I had easy access to one of the now un-attributed titles, to see what the onscreen credit really looks like. I too am unfamiliar with Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, and am suspicious about the commonality of its use onscreen.
I searched for IMDbTV or Prime Video $0, but the only result already has the -B... attribute:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?online_availability=US%2FIMDbTV,US%2Ftoday%2FAmazon%2Fsubs&role=nm0006196
Nor do the titles I own have the lack of attribute.
When I click Show All credits on Mendelssohn's page, I find 35 "-Barth" on the page. So that credit was indeed preserved for some titles.
BTW, here is the page in March 2020, still with the hyphenate:
https://web.archive.org/web/20200325012247/https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006196/
Bottom line: I'd be very wary of changing the bulk of his credits to have the "as ...-Bartholdy" attribute, because I don't trust that contributors are always meticulous about entering an attribute for a shortened version of the name, especially when it's the mostly commonly used form. (In case that wasn't clear: if I saw that his name was FM-B on IMDb, I may not have entered "as FM" with his credit. I'm abbreviating for this post.)
