Changes to contributions containing freetext information

Today (9 May 2018) we are rolling out changes to where and how freetext information is entered and posted to IMDb staff. As the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content, IMDb is continuously making improvements to our website and apps based on our customers’ feedback and the usage of our many features.

From today, the following change will take effect:

  • Contributions to Miscellaneous Comments and Miscellaneous Corrections will no longer be available. Instead ‘Explanations’ to support your contribution can be submitted directly with the item information to provide better context or via a Helpdesk contact.
  • Email receipts sent following your contribution will not include any non published freetext data provided, this includes Explanation comments
Thank you for your continued support

What does this mean?

I submit a name update, the Explanation still filter out non-latin characters.

Hi kaisic king,

For your name updates you are using the correct method to provide Explanation information. This change only relates to the submission options that were under ‘Other Corrections’.

"Instead ‘Explanations’ to support your contribution can be submitted directly with the item information to provide better context"

Do you plan to add more explanation boxes in the update forms?

This policy makes sense, and I had been one who suggested IMDb to scrap those Miscellaneous Comments and Corrections lines.

Hi Peter,

We will continue to review submissions, Helpdesk contacts and discussions here for situations where additional explanation information would have been important. It is possible some update forms will be enhanced to add an explanation box.

Thanks

Ok, I'm a bit lost here. Where exactly should I post e.g. Dropbox links (screenshots of the actual credits, TV listings from magazines, articles, etc) when adding New Titles? I mean I add new titles (often older ones) all the time and often provide proof via screenshots of the actual credits.

Instead ‘Explanations’ to support your contribution can be submitted directly with the item information to provide better context or via a Helpdesk contact.
Do you mean that I should find "Explanations" box somewhere in the New Title form? Surely you don't want people to submit a New Title form and then add proof via Help Desk seperately?

Thanks.

The new title form does have an optional explanation field in addition to the Miscellaneous Links section. But they don't actually require screenshots to add new titles.

Peter, I know the "This title has warnings, you must acknowledge each one before this title will be accepted..." part (under the very basic info) where I can tick the the "Provide explanation" box etc, but I believe that option is not available anymore when you've have "enough" info to actually submit the New Title form. BUT, enough info for the form is not always the same thing as "enough proof".

Maybe I am missing something here, but I find it a bit odd that now there's no place for those "miscellaneous links" that you DON'T want to add to the actual title page (like e.g. Dropbox links, or e.g. a Youtube link to the program that you know may have some copyright-issues). Not all links (proof/sources/screenshots) are something that you actually want to see in the title page.

Thanks.

I believe you can click the checkbox before you finish entering the information and then continue to fill out the form.

I agree that there may be links that you don't want to be displayed on the site. It used to be the case that Miscellaneous Links submitted with new titles were not necessarily added to the site, but now they seem to be accepted even if the descriptions are poorly formatted.

Yes, I guess that is how it goes. But many will probably miss that option.

This is very common, at least for me (like I said, I often provide screenshots and such). I only add "Miscellaneous Links" when the link has proper info about the title etc.
