certification

Is IMDb no longer accepting "X (self-applied)" as a certification class for hardcore porn films? I just submitted that rating for five of them and they were all rejected, which they never have been before.

Is this yet another example of IMdb's recent rash of "improvements"?

I'm pretty sure IMDb only goes by official ratings, like the MPAA. The X rating (which they forgot to copyright and is why pornos can use it), was only valid from 1968-1990 when they introduced the new (copyrighted) NC-17. Pornos would be official unrated as they are never submitted for ratings.

@adrian The MPAA didn't forget to trademark the X rating; that was intentional. They wanted all movie producers to participate in the rating system, so they allowed the most restrictive rating to be self-applied without requiring the filmmakers to submit their movies and pay a fee.

If a pornographic film, not submitted to the MPAA, was in fact marketed with the words "Rated X", then IMDb should allow it to be listed with the certificate "X (self-applied)".

@gromit82

Unintended consequences, I guess. It is the association with pornography that finally did away with the X rating. Self applied ratings have no real meaning. They could certify them as AA for all ages and it would be equally meaningless. The only valid designation I've seen (in the US) for films not rated by the MPAA is NR (not rated).

Allowing self-applied ratings would open a whole can of worms that I don't think IMDb wants to deal with.
