Can't correct crew credits

When I attempt to correct a crew credit listing, choosing Cast & Crew > Edit > (both Sound and Editorial Dept) > (choose) Correct / Delete

I am then led to a form which doesn't give many ANY existing option to correct. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. How do I get the names to populate so I can correct them? Do I have to add them, then correct them? The directions here do not say anything about having to do all these extra steps.

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks!

Swoody: It looks like you are trying to correct credits for a TV series, but you started from the page for the series, as opposed to a page for an episode. However, for TV series, substantially all of the credits are supposed to be stored at episode level, not at series level.

What you see displayed on the series' cast and crew page is just a compilation of the credits from the individual episodes. It's not possible to edit those credits by starting from the page for the series. This is explained at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/how-do-i-add-an-episodic-credit/GRRHUZAQPQV4T2F9#:

Why does IMDb say "No existing data" when I try to update a credit on a TV-series?

The data you are trying to update does not exist on the series-level page; please be aware that the credit is stored on the individual episode pages but populates the series page to provide a more complete overview. This is why submitting a change on the series page will return the error “No existing data”.

To update this data type, please use the “Edit Page” on the episode page that the item is located on.

I recommend going to the pages for the individual episodes to make the corrections you need.

However, if you are dealing with a situation where making the corrections would be a very large amount of work in terms of the number of episodes you need to correct, please post here what series it is and what corrections you need to make (that is, what is the incorrect information and what should it be changed to). Depending on what the correction is, there may be a way of submitting the corrections in a more efficient way, which the contributors or staff here may be able to describe.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Thank you!! Yes, many of these credits go across multiple episodes. The series is https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22025662/.  I am trying to add the following to episodes (for season 1 and 2). In some cases the wrong person is linked, and I need them all to be the same. For example, 2 different David Hills are linked.

SOUND (correct)  - all episodes, both season 1 and 2
David Hill (LXXXIV) re-recording mixer

EDITORIAL (correct) - all episodes, both season 1 and 2
Scott Roy (I) svp of post
Alan Maynard (I) on-line editor

CAST (correct) -- all (season 2) episodes

Kaoru Watanabe (III)

Sandeep Das (II)

Niwel Tsumbu (1)

Listed twice under Additional Crew

John Ortiz ... production assistant (6 episodes, 2024)
John Ortiz ... production assistant (2 episodes, 2024)

swoody: There are several situations here that need to be dealt with, and there may be different ways to fix them. So I will take them one at a time.

David Hill (LXXXIV): If all the credits for David Hill (LXXXIV) and David Hill (CLII) belong to the same person as you imply, then this can be fixed with a Name Merge. This will put all credits for both entries under the David Hill (LXXXIV) page.

Go to the page for David Hill (CLII) at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm15960388/ and click "Edit page".

On the next screen, on the Name Merge line, select "Add merge". Scroll down and click "Continue".

On the next screen, there will be a blank space in which to enter the corrected name. Enter it as:

Hill, David (LXXXIV)

Un-check the box marked "Preserve previous name on existing credits. i.e. '(as David Hill)'". It's not relevant to this situation.

In the Explanation box, enter something like this: "David Hill (CLII) is a duplicate entry for David Hill (LXXXIV). All credits on both pages belong to the same person. In fact, all of David Hill (CLII)'s credits are as a re-recording mixer for episodes of the TV series "My Music with Rhiannon Giddens" (2023), for which David Hill (LXXXIV) is already credited as a re-recording mixer for other episodes. They are the same person and these pages should be merged." The purpose of this explanation is to show that you know what you are talking about and really do want these pages to be merged. Click "Check these updates".

On the next screen, you will get a warning that says, "You are about to merge two separate name pages into one. Are you sure you wish to merge this name page into the page for Hill, David (LXXXIV)?" That's what you want, so check the box marked "Warning understood, go ahead anyway." Click "Re-check these updates".

On the next screen, your data should appear with a green background, and you should be able to click "Submit these updates".

Allow a few days for the merge to go through.

More to come ...

For Alan Maynard, the same situation appears to apply as for David Hill. Go to the page for Alan Maynard (II) at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm15960387/ and submit a Name Merge for him to merge his page to Maynard, Alan (I) making the appropriate changes from the procedure in my post above.

swoody:

For Kaoro Watanabe, you will want to go to the page of Kaoru Watanabe (IX) at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm15949532/ and submit a Name Merge for him to merge his page to Watanabe, Kaoro (III) using a similar procedure as you did for David Hill. The difference is that you will have to leave out the sentence analogous to "In fact, all of David Hill (CLII)'s credits are as a re-recording mixer for episodes of the TV series "My Music with Rhiannon Giddens" (2023), for which David Hill (LXXXIV) is already credited as a re-recording mixer for other episodes" because there is only one Kaoru Watanabe credited on this series. Instead, if you have any other evidence that Kaoru Watanabe (III) and (IX) are the same, please include it in your explanation.

For Niwel Tsumbu, you can follow the same procedure as with David Hill and Alan Maynard, because Niwel Tsumbu (I) already has credits on this series and Niwel Tsumbu (II)'s only credit is on this series. Go to the page for Niwel Tsumbu (II) at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm15949531/ and submit a Name Merge to merge his page to Tsumbu, Niwel (I) as with the others.

For John Ortiz, the same situation applies as with David Hill, Alan Maynard, and Niwel Tsumbu. Whenever you merge two people whose names are identical except for the roman numeral in parentheses, you should merge the higher roman numeral version into the lower roman numeral version. So you will want to do a Name Merge for John Ortiz (XVIII) at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm15960389/ and merge his page to Ortiz, John (XVII) as with the others.

swoody: For the other two people, the situation is more complicated because in each case, the incorrect version also has at least one other credit. So you would not want to do a Name Merge for them, unless you knew that all the credits on the incorrect version's page belonged to the correct version, and I'm assuming that's not the case.

For Sandeep Das (IV), since he only has a credit on one episode of "My Music with Rhiannon Giddens", I recommend making this correction from the page for that episode (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt31849484/). Go to that page and click "Edit page".

On the next screen, on the Cast line, select "Correct/Delete". Scroll down and click "Continue".

On the next screen, you will see the cast for the episode listed. Select "Correct" next to Sandeep's name. Click "Check these updates".

On the next screen, you will see that his name is editable. Change the roman numeral so that his name will be:

Das, Sandeep (II)

Check the box marked "Provide an explanation to assist in processing this submission". An explanation box will then appear. In that box, explain that the person who appeared in this episode is Sandeep Das (II), not Sandeep Das (IV), and if you can provide further details about how that can be confirmed, please do so. Click "Check these updates".

On the next screen, you will get a warning that says, "'Das, Sandeep (II)' does not have any existing credits in this section. Are you sure this is the right person?" Assuming you are sure, select the option that says, "This is the first credit in this section for 'Das, Sandeep (II)'." Click "Re-check these updates".

On the next screen, your data will appear with a green background, and you should be able to click "Submit these updates".

***

While preparing the above instructions, I noticed that there is also a Sandeep Das (V) listed as appearing in 5 episodes of this series. Fortunately, this version has no credits other than on this same TV series. To merge this version to Sandeep Das (II), you can do a Name Merge similar to the one with Kaoru Watanabe.

swoody: And that just leaves Scott Roy. Since Scott Roy (III) has other credits besides "My Music with Rhiannon Giddens" that you presumably don't want to merge to Scott Roy (I), but he has credits on 13 episodes of this series, this will be a different procedure.

Go to the Scott Roy (III) page at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6546099/. Click "Edit page".

On the next screen, on the Editorial Department member Credits line, select "Correct/Delete". Scroll down and click "Continue".

On the next screen, select "Correct" next to every one of his episodes of "My Music with Rhiannon Giddens". At the bottom of his list of credits, there will be a checkbox labeled "Show name?". This is very important. Check that box. Click "Check these updates".

On the next screen, you will see that for all of the episodes of this series that you are correcting, there will be a Name box that you can edit. For each of those credits, change the name to Roy, Scott (I) every time. Then check every box marked "Provide an explanation to assist in processing this submission". In the Explanation box, explain that this job was done by Scott Roy (I), not Scott Roy (III), and if you can provide further details about how that can be confirmed, please do so. Copy that exact same explanation into every one of the Explanation boxes. Click "Check these updates".

On the next screen, your data should appear with a green background, and you should be able to click "Submit these updates".

***

Surprising as it may seem, it probably won't take you that much longer to submit these corrections than it took me to write out these instructions for you. Allow a few days for each of these changes to go through.

Good luck!
