Box Office Mojo -- problems with Release Schedule Changes

There is a problem with the listing of Domestic Release Schedule Changes on Boxofficemojo.com (https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/changes/).

Sometimes there are two entries for the same film, on the same announcement day, which are contradictory to each other. See below:

As indicated by the arrows above, the listings claim that The Smurfs Movie is having its release changed from July 25, 2025 to July 18, 2025, and also having its release changed from February 14, 2025 to July 25, 2025. The listings also claim that Vicious is having its wide release on February 28, 2025 and also having a limited release on February 28, 2025.

This leaves it unclear (a) whether The Smurfs Movie will be released on July 18 or July 25, and (b) whether Vicious will get a limited or a wide release on February 28.

All of these announcements are listed as having been made on October 4, so it's not a matter of the studio changing its release schedule and then changing it again a few weeks or months later.

These are not the only examples, but they are the most recent ones.

Hello @gromit82,

Thank you so much for submitting this feedback.

The duplicated entry has been removed. For the titles that also have two lines, you can check the difference between one being a Wide Release date and the other one a Limited Release date.

For example "Conclave", it had a Wide Release date that changed from Nov 8, 2024 to Oct 25, 2024 and a Limited Release date that was schedule for Nov 1, 2024 and it's now schedule also on Oct 25, 2024.

@Jolene I'm not sure I've explained the problem fully, or at any rate it appears to still be going on.

Looking at the current schedule at https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/changes/:

As of Nov. 5, 2024, Michael has a limited release AND a wide release scheduled on Oct. 3, 2025.

As of Oct. 28, 2024, My Dead Friend Zoe has a limited release AND a wide release scheduled on Feb. 28, 2025.

If these films have wide releases scheduled for those dates, then their limited releases on the same day should be listed as removed.

In the case of Conclave, you can see at https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl3898179585/weekend/ that the film started out in 1,753 theaters in its first weekend, which is a wide release. Apparently the distributor had at one point planned to start the film in limited release and later go wide, but they changed their plans and decided to start the film in wide release, skipping the idea of a limited release. (See this IndieWire article.) In other words, Conclave wound up having only a Wide Release, with no Limited Release.
