Body and Soul (1925) novel
Various sources, including IMDb, indicate that Oscar Micheaux's 1925 film Body and Soul was based on his own novel (presumably of the same name). However, I've searched and searched and cannot find any record of the alleged novel's publication. Though Micheaux was known to have written several novels in his lifetime, only three (to my knowledge) were published before 1925, and none of them match the title or description of the film's plot.
The film is in the public domain and copies can be found online quite easily; while the intertitles name most of the principal cast members and designate the film as "an Oscar Micheaux production", there are no writing credits of any kind.
If anyone knows anything about this and/or can produce evidence of such a novel existing, they ought to do so. Otherwise, methinks the writing credits for this title should be changed to "Oscar Micheaux... written by (uncredited)" instead of what they currently say.
Relevant links:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0015634/fullcredits/ - The film on IMDb.
https://downtownsf.org/do/movies-at-mechanics-presents-body-and-soul-1925 - One of several online sources claiming (without providing any verification) that the film was based on a novel. The same claim can be found on sites such as IMDb, Wikipedia, Turner Classic Movies, etc.
https://www.micheaux.org/books/ - List of books known to have been written by Micheaux, including publisher and publication dates. "Body and Soul" is not on the list, nor anything resembling that title.
https://search.worldcat.org/ - The publicly available access point to the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) database of thousands of library collections in the United States and around the world. No book matching the description of Body and Soul by Oscar Micheaux can be found on that site. I've also searched the OCLC WorldShare Metadata Services (which requires a subscription) for potential bibliographic records of the alleged book and found nothing (apart from a 2007 Criterion Collection pamphlet about the making of the film and, of course, several records for Micheaux's other literary works).
In conclusion, it seems likely that the "novel 'Body and Soul'" writing credit is erroneous.
In a few moments I will submit a contribution to revise IMDb's writing credits for this title. I will link to this post as evidence. If anyone objects to this, they should prove me wrong, or something. The end.
