Birthdates and social media links

Looking at the submission guide for birthdates at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/names-biographical-data/biographical-data-guidelines/GMT9T242VQADZUQM#birthdeath, I see the following:
We do not consider Wikipedia (or other collaboratively edited wiki-style sites) to be an acceptable source for birth dates. However, many Wikipedia articles include online citations and external links which provide supporting evidence of the subject's birth date, and these are often appropriate URLs to include in your submission. We are looking for links to public records, printed publications, or official documents. We do allow social media links to be an acceptable source for birthdates (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
I'm surprised that social media such as Facebook and Twitter are considered acceptable sources. Does anyone know when and why that policy was implemented? Does this mean that people in the entertainment industry can self-verify their birthdates by stating them in their Twitter bios?

Regarding your question of when and why, it is not a recent change to the guide. See for instance:

I really hope a staffer will respond to this thread because it seems these guides should be updated. For as far as I know, IMDb doesn't (and never has) accept(ed) social media links.

Perhaps the guide text could be clarified to say that social media links are reviewed but may not be sufficient, along the lines of the replies in the topic I linked to above as well as these:

There are some issues in this thread that could use some attention from a member of staff.

I once showed an actress saying happy birthday to herself on Instagram going back six years on the same day before IMDB believed the date was real. I occasionally reach out on Instagram and message the person. I screenshot the response and that get excepted by IMDb.

Hi @gromit82 -

Our policy team has reviewed this and decided the policy will remain as is for now. Thanks for reporting it. Evidence provided can be reviewed at any time, as in all of our data in the site, evaluated for every specific case.

Cheers!

@Bethanny Can you explain why? As you know, age is a very tricky thing in showbiz and people in it have been known to lie about it and/or wanting to hide it, up to the point that IMDb (a database!) even helps them with this. So to allow this same group of people to trust them about this information seems a bit naive.

@Marco As mentioned before in my comment, this is evaluated for every specific case by our editors, so this will remain as is.

Thanks!
