Band Names Being Alphabetized as Individuals

The following bands/duos have had their names alphabetized as if they were individuals.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions

Pat and Mick

Transvision Vamp

The The  (yes, as "The, The".)

I tried correcting Transvision Vamp from "Vamp, Transvision" to "Transvision Vamp, (I)" and it was rejected due to my adding the Roman numeral but I didn't know any other approach to take.   Please fix these.    Thank you.

Hi @jasonik75,

Thank you for your problem report. I have looked into this for you and can see that the names are formatted as they should be. As these names are never displayed in reverse order on their name pages or filmography as you have detailed above, this is not an issue. However, wherever you feel like the duplicate listing of the individuals and the bands/duos is redundant, you can continue to correct/remove these appropriately.

I hope this helps!

I clicked on the October 25, 1989 episode of "Des O'Connor Tonight", which listed Transvision Vamp in the cast.  I clicked on the Edit function and they were listed as "Vamp, Transvision."

I did the same check for the October 24, 1989 episode of "Big World Cafe", which listed The The in the cast.  I clicked on the Edit Function and they were listed as "The, The."

So, yes, it is an issue.

Hi @jasonik75,

This is how a vast majority of name pages are formatted within the IMDb Contribution Form, however they are never displayed as such on the site, therefore there is no need for a correction here.

I hope this helps!

Names says: "There are some exceptions: Stage names that don't resemble normal names, i.e. Little Richard, Meat Loaf, 50 Cent, Cedric the Entertainer, Boyz II Men, and Herbert the Rooster are not reversed."

It can be an issue wherever names are alphabetized – such as in searches or some credit lists.

I don't see a problem with The The. The Beatles are also listed as Beatles, The.

I'm not sure how groups like Elvis Costello and The Attractions should be alphabetized.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions should be alphabetized under "C."

The Beatles being alphabetized that way is correct.

My training is as a librarian, so I take this stuff seriously.

Hi @jasonik75,

Elvis Costello and The Attractions do not have any credits that would see the band listed in an incorrect alphabetical order. We will not change the formatting of a name page that has no affect in how the name is displayed on the site.

I hope this helps!

@Ozzy Your statement contradicts the part of the guide quoted by @Peter_pbn . So either the guide or your statement needs a little tweak it seems.

Can someone (staffer or not) remove the Solved tag from this thread please?

Only staff can manage those settings at this point. But new comments on posts often make posts revert to "no status".

@Ozzy

The fact that there are no credits currently that see the band listed incorrectly does not preclude the fact that it may happen in the future. There's no reason to ignore the problem simply because it isn't causing issues now when the fix is pretty simple.

Hi all,

We have confirmed with the relevant teams that whilst this is not a display issue and therefore should not set a precedent for similar changes, we have now reformatted the name text for Elvis Costello and The Attractions in accordance with the non-reversed stage names in the Names guidelines.

Thanks!
