@Bethanny

There is a timing problem.

Over the Top (1987)

references Tango and Cash (1989)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093692/movieconnections#references

references   the title references or pays homage to a previous title

https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/movie-connections/GNUNL9W2FTZDGF4Y

There is probably no reason to think that the expression FUBAR in a 1987 movie is a reference to any movie.

@Peter_pbn Had not notice that, thanks! @LUKESMITH73 seems the connection is not eligible, we have deleted it.

Cheers!

I don't understand @Peter_pbn  & @Bethanny F.U.B.A.R. was only mentioned or used in two separate movies both with Sylvester Stallone.

There's no other 80's movie or wasn't widely used elsewhere.

Luke: First of all, if as Peter indicated, the reference was formatted to say that Over the Top (1987) references Tango & Cash (1989), that would not make sense, since normally a movie cannot reference a future movie. It might be the case that Tango & Cash referenced Over the Top, but it would be unlikely to be vice versa.

(Disclaimer: There are examples of future references -- for example, characters in Clerks II (2006) talk about the movie Transformers (2007) as a film that was going to be released the following year -- but they are relatively rare.)

As to this particular reference, I haven't seen either of the films so I don't know if it is a reference at all. "FUBAR" is an acronym that dates back to World War II, meaning (in its censored version) "fouled up beyond all recognition". It was created by the same kind of people who invented the word "SNAFU" to mean "situation normal, all fouled up" (again, in its censored version).

The question is whether the use of similar T-shirts in the two movies is really a reference from one film to the other, or just the use of a popular T-shirt.

@gromit82  Over the top was made 1st with tango and Cash made 2 years later, which can easily researched. No other 2 80's movies made use of the acronym otherwise.

@gromit82

No T-shirt in Tango & Cash has been mentioned. There is this line:

@LUKESMITH73

It is perhaps a funny coincidence. Maybe it could be a trivia item for Over the Top.

The whole point was that an acronym on a T-shirt was mentioned in another movie that was the connection.

@LUKESMITH73 But the same acronym FUBAR was mentioned in, among others, Saving Private Ryan (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120815/quotes/?item=qt0441698), Tropic Thunder (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942385/quotes/?item=qt0506449), and The Deep Blue Sea (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1700844/quotes/?item=qt1695739). I don't think those are all references to Over the Top.

The fact that Sylvester Stallone starred in both Over the Top and Tango & Cash could make the reference to FUBAR in both films a trivia item, but not necessarily a reference.

@Peter_pbn Thanks, I hadn't understood the context.
