Award years: the Retro Hugo Awards
As correctly explained at https://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000335/overview/, the Hugo Awards are given for achievements in the science fiction genre -- "(best novel, best fanzine etc.)". The Hugos also include awards for Best Dramatic Presentation (including primarily movies and television), and the Best Dramatic Presentation award categories ("BDPs") are listed in IMDb.
However, occasionally there have been Hugo Awards voted on retrospectively, known as the Retro Hugo Awards. (See https://www.wsfs.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/WSFS-Constitution-as-of-October-23_2023B.pdf, page 12, section 3.14, where the World Science Fiction Society Constitution authorizes the Retro Hugos.) These awards are given for achievements in years when no Hugo Awards were previously given (either because the Hugos did not yet exist, or because of one early year they skipped).
The Retro Hugos have always been given 50 or 75 years later, and since, like many awards, the Hugos are given for achievements in the preceding year, the Retro Hugos have been given 51 or 76 years after the corresponding works were published/released.
Here is a list of the Retro Hugo years as listed on IMDb, the years when the relevant films (etc.) were released, and the years when the Retro Hugos were actually awarded.
- 1939 Retro Hugos -- works of 1938, awarded in 2014
- 1941 Retro Hugos -- works of 1940, awarded in 2016
- 1943 Retro Hugos -- works of 1942, awarded in 2018
- 1944 Retro Hugos -- works of 1943, awarded in 2019
- 1945 Retro Hugos -- works of 1944, awarded in 2020
- 1946 Retro Hugos -- works of 1945, awarded in 1996
- 1951 Retro Hugos -- works of 1950, awarded in 2001
- 1954 Retro Hugos -- works of 1953, awarded in 2004
All the other Hugo Awards listed at https://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000335/overview/ were given contemporaneously.
So my questions are:
- Should the Retro Hugos be broken out on IMDb as a separate awards event from the main Hugo Awards ...
- and should they be identified by IMDb with the year they were awarded, as is the standard policy for awards?
***
A couple of other notes: The IMDb page for the 1953 Hugo Awards is blank because in that first year of the awards, there were no categories related to movies or television (see https://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-history/1953-hugo-awards/). That page should probably be deleted. Similarly, there are no pages for the 1955, 1956, or 1957 Hugo Awards on IMDb because in those years there were no categories related to movies or television, either.

Hi @gromit82 -
We do not think separating the Retro Hugo Awards into a new event is necessary because this awards are in a way within the same event. However and per our policies, the awards should be identified with the year they were awarded.
Cheers!
