In Progress

As of tonight (July 30/31, 2026) I can't post explanations for release date changes

For years I have been providing accurate information about release dates of films for IMDb.  Tonight, for the first time, it won't let me post.  I fill out the city, date, etc. as usual, and then put in the explanation with the link to newspapers.com as usual, but I get a form that turns pink, with this message:

"This item has been rejected. You need to correct this item before it will be accepted.

  •  We could not save your explanation. Please try again. If the issue persists, try using a different browser or disabling any extensions."

Does anyone know what is causing this?  I'm doing nothing different from what I have done for years: same procedure, computer, browser (Chrome), etc.

Someone else reported that error, but said it stopped after clearing cookies.

Hello old_film_lover

Are you still experiencing this issue? Can you help us confirm?

Thank you for replying.  I am still experiencing the issue.  I tried submitting new release dates for a an entirely different film in case the problem was with the film I was trying to correct, but exactly the same message appears.

I cleared one of the two extensions to Chrome, but as the other is Norton Safe Search, I'm hesitant to clear it -- especially since I've never had the problem with Norton Safe Search for the past several years of adding to data to the IMDb.

I suppose I could try submitting through Microsoft Edge, but I hate Edge.

I can try to copy and paste a screenshot of what I'm seeing, if that would help you any.

@Fran

I have further information.  I have gone back, using the "Your Contribution" feature, into several of my old contributions -- contributions that were accepted -- and I find that in all cases, while the changes are still accepted, under "Your Comment" there is the notation:

Your Comment
"There was an error fetching the comment."

So there is a problem with IMDb reading not only what I type in the explanation box now, but even with reading all of what I have typed in the explanation boxes in the past.  This is a serious problem for me, since I used those past explanations in my research both for future comments and for other purposes.  I need to be able to read them again.

I stress that this only happened for the first time yesterday, when I posted the problem.  Prior to that, it had never happened before.

I have more information.  I used the "Your Contribution" feature which I use to look into my past contributions that have been accepted, and, while all the changes are still accepted, I can no longer read the explanations I submitted to justify the changes.  What shows up is:

Your Comment
“There was an error fetching the comment.” This is a serious problem, as I rely on those past explanations not only in formulating new corrections, but for other historical research, and I need to be able to read them again.  Somehow IMDb is not only unable to receive my new explanations for changes, but to retain my earlier explanations.  And this only happened yesterday -- it had never happened before.  And I haven't changed anything on my system: still using the latest update of Chrome from my desktop.

@old_film_lover - In order for us to gather further information, can you provide us with the following as well:

  1. Browser Information
    • Name (example: Firefox, Edge, Chrome, Safari...):
    • Version:
    • Using the browser on which device (ex: mobile, desktop, laptop, tablet...):
  2. Screenshots (please provide screenshots of the error message on the contribution form or a short video of the steps)
  3. Do you have an ad blocker enabled? (Y/N):

Google Chrome Version 151.0.7922.72 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Desktop

Windows 10

I am unaware of having put on any ad blocker, but if you will tell me where to look, I'll try to find out.

I'm including an image of my "Your Contribution" page for my release date addition to Doctor Blood's Coffin.  You can see that under "Your Comment" my explanation has been replaced by the words "There was an error fetching the comment."  And this is the case for all my past explanations now.  IMDb can no longer retrieve them.  This seems connected with the fact that I can't put in new explanations when I submit new data.  IMDb is not allowing my browser access to the Explanation box and it cannot retrieve my past text that was put in that box.  Here is what the page looks like (copy and paste):

Your Contribution

19 July 2026
#260719-122109-078000 Doctor Blood's Coffin (1961) 1 item
Release Date    Approved (1)

Release DateAddition

USA26 April 1961(Los Angeles, CA)
Your Comment
“ There was an error fetching the comment. ”

@Maya

Has anyone found any more information on my problem?  I still am not allowed to put anything in the explanation box.  I can still put through my requests to add information for dates and places of film showings, but since I can't prove anything, there is no guarantee IMDb will accept this.

Something IMDb started doing about July 30 caused this problem.  I changed nothing on my system.  And as I said, I can't even look up my old explanations any more.  Something in the IMDb software, a change made about July 30 or 31, has stopped me from being able to look up my old explanations or submit any new ones.  Surely if a change was made in the software at IMDb around July 30/31 it should be possible to look up what that change was, and reverse it, or at least create a workaround for submissions coming from my system.

If you try using a different browser at least you will know whether your problem is browser-specific. As I said, clearing cookies in Chrome might also help.

I've never cleared my cookies before.  I would only want to clear my cookies, not my History or anything else.  Are there any risks in clearing cookies?  Will it mess up my passwords and logins for Amazon, Ebay, and other merchant sites?
