Are text-to-speech/speech synthesis casts allowed on IMDb?

I've been wondering whether text-to-speech is allowed in casts. Some films, series, and games use speech synthesis instead of real actors, but I don't know if IMDb allows it or if it's only permitted with real actors, without AI or speech synthesis voices. There was a film example, WALL-E, where the steering robot AUTO was voiced using MacInTalk, Apple's speech synthesis program. Despite this, I'm still unsure if it's even allowed to use a computer-generated voice in a cast. So, my question is: can voices that aren't from real people be added to a cast? I just want to be sure for my future contributor.

Hi Ravendark -

Currently, all AI and digital characters or personas are consolidated under a single, unified “Digital Performer (Various)” Name page. Digital Performer (Various) represents the collective presence of artificially intelligent performers, personas, and synthetic voices appearing in entertainment media.  Some examples include text-to-speech systems like MacInTalk (which you mentioned), virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa, and generative AI characters.

Be aware that at the moment, only Name Credits submitted to the category of "Self" are acceptable on the name page.

I hope this update helps!

Hi @Michelle

I think it's a good idea to add a name page that is exclusively for AI-powered performers, personas, and synthetic voices. I want to ask, could you also merge these people together in"Digital Performer (Various)"?

These are all the remaining synthetic voices/text-to-speak performers, who might also be listed under the Digital Performer (Various) category, if possible. There could be more, but these are the only ones I know of at the moment.

And a question about the "Self" category: why do they have to be added under "Self" instead of "Cast"? Some of these are synthetic voices dubbed for characters in movies, TV series, or video games, that belongs to "Cast", and the "Self" category should be for voices that talk about themselves, like Alexa or Siri.

I hope you understand what I mean.

Hi @Ravendark -

Thanks for reporting these titles, our staff are reviewing the credits and will move them applicably.

Regarding your question about the "Self" category requirement, listing credits in this manner currently allows us to display them consistently without assigning a gender, as cast credits are now required to be submitted with an actor or actress selection.

@Michelle Oh... I see. Okay, then I just need to credit the "Self" category. Thanks a lot otherwise. :)
