Adding Soundtrack items to a Series

Recently, I spent a lot of time editing the soundtracks all
of the episodes of the television series, “Entourage (2004)” (tt0387199).

Basically each of the 96 episodes had two entries of the same song:

Superhero
(uncredited)
Written by Perry FarrellDavid NavarroStephen PerkinsRobert Ezrin and Aaron Embry
Performed by Jane's Addiction

And

Superhero
(uncredited)
Performed by Jane’s Addiction

Given that the entries were exactly the same in each episode, it is probable that each was entered as a Soundtrack item at Series level and applied to all the episodes.

Now, I believe that it would have been far more efficient and effective if I had been able to go to the Series entry and edit the Soundtrack items there and apply these changes to all the episodes again.

However, this was not possible. There are no Soundtrack items in the series entry.

I know from experience that, when a Soundtrack item is added to a series and applied to (selected) episodes, the item appears in the Soundtrack list for each episode but vanishes from the Series soundtrack. (I added a Soundtrack item to Series 1 and 2 of “Cardinal” (tt5583512).)

There are another couple of examples where a similar situation exists.

Example 1

An Advanced Search for ‘Vaughan’ returns over 190 results for

Written by 'Ben Vaughan (II)' (uncredited)

Looking at the Soundtrack item, it is:

That '70s Song
Written by 'Ben Vaughan (II)' (uncredited)
Performed by Cheap Trick
Based on "In the Street"
Written by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell

It appears that the song was added as a Soundtrack item to the Series and applied to all the episodes. When it was entered under the old system of linking names, it was improperly formed.

So to correct this error and add the link using the new system, there would have to be over 190 separate updates.

Example 2

An Advanced Search for ‘Kaempfert’ returns over 370 results for “The Match Game” (tt0055688) in one of three formats.

A Swingin' Safari (The MATCH GamE)
Written & Performed by Bert Kaempfert
A Swingin' Safari (The MATCH GamE)
is Composed by Bert Kaempfert.
A Swingin' Safari (The MATCH GamE)
Composed by Bert Kaempfert

As well, there are 498 episodes with a link on the name:

A Swingin' Safari (The Theme of The Match Game)
Written and performed by Bert Kaempfert

Again, it is likely that a person (or two or three) has added a Soundtrack item to the Series and applied it to some of the episodes. It could be that Kaempfert was credited in different ways for different series.

But to add a link to the unlinked names, there would have to be over 370 separate updates.

So, my suggestion is this:

That, when a Soundtrack item is added to a series and then applied to (selected) episodes, it remains in the series soundtrack listing and is available for editing from there. Any editing changes can then be re-applied to the episodes.

I hope this makes sense.

It makes sense, but I doubt it’s possible to make such a change in the current update system. It works the same way with credits and other data: Items can be added to many episodes at the same time from the series listing, but can only be corrected from the each episode listing.

Which is asinine.
