Adding "short" as a genre to a 44-minute film was rejected several times

This classic French short film from the 1930s is 44 minutes long, but it is not possible to add a short as a genre, can someone explain why?

Hi @plur62,

Thank you for your problem report.

Please can you provide us with the 18-digit submission reference for your latest attempt to submit this genre to the title, so we can look into this for you.

Thanks!

Hi @plur62,

Thank you. I have reviewed this issue and can confirm that we have added the genre manually, as there is a technical issue causing the multiple declined contributions. The updated genre will appear live on the site shortly.

Cheers!

@plur62

IMDb follows MPAA / AFI / BFI conventions, according to which, films of just 40 minutes or longer are considered "feature length".

From Wikipedia:

"The notion of how long a feature film should be has varied according to time and place. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the American Film Institute and the British Film Institute, a feature film runs for more than 40 minutes, while the Screen Actors Guild asserts that a feature's running time is 60 minutes or longer. The Centre National de la Cinématographie in France defines it as a 35 mm film longer than 1,600 metres (5,200 ft), which is exactly 58 minutes and 29 seconds for sound films."

I thought the SGA specified 75 minutes.

Hard to keep track of these things.

Hi @plur62,

We do not accept Wikipedia as a suitable source of evidence for most contributions to IMDb. Our threshold for the Short genre running times is detailed in our help guide, as mentioned above.

I hope this helps!

I used to work as an college lecturer.

My rule for Research Papers was: "You may read Wikipedia to get a general understanding, and use the external references on Wikipedia as references, but not the Wikipedia article itself."

I stand by that.

I never made one; it is not relevant to the subjects I taught.

To me it's not a question of whether Wikipedia is better or worse than IMDb. One major user-contributed secondary source relying on information from another does not necessarily produce the most accurate data.

I guess the point is that IMDb has a threshold of 45 minutes. What Wikipedia or other sites list is probably not so important in the case of IMDb. Generally it could be 40 mins or over (like in the Oscars: https://www.oscars.org/sites/oscars/files/91aa_short_films.pdf ), but in IMDb it’s 45 or over.
