Adding DVD releases on Films with V prefix

When I try to add a release date on a film that is a Video film and I Chose Physical Type in the Select release type box I am forced to choose the media format in the additional information box, but whatever format I chose I get an error and can't get further. The only way to add a new release day on a Film stated as Video is to choose Unknown in the Select release type box. This must be an error!

Karl: I just tried this, and it seemed to work correctly. For Select release type, I chose "Physical media (e.g. Blu-Ray, DVD)", and then in the Additional information box, I entered: (DVD)

If that doesn't work for you, please post a screen shot of what you are entering in the Release Date section and the error you are receiving.

Hi @karl_gustav_andersson -

I was able to replicate this block when entering "(DVD premiere)" within the Additional Information box. I have filed a ticket with the appropriate team to confirm the expected behavior when this specific selection is made, once I have more information I will post the details here.

Michelle: Am I correct in saying that the word premiere as in "DVD premiere" is the problem here?

I thought that one was supposed to use [medium] premiere only in circumstances where a title was released in a territory in a medium other than its original medium. Example: A theatrical film is released straight to video in a given country: (video premiere). A direct-to-video title is released to television in a given country: (TV premiere).

Sometimes, titles which are intended for release in cinemas instead end up going directly to video, TV, or online in certain countries (usually because of poor box office performance in other countries).

We indicate this via the attributes (video premiere) or (TV premiere) respectively.

As I suggested above, the attribute (DVD) should be what Karl is looking for in this situation instead of (DVD premiere).

Hello,

Please find screenshot down in order to support my (and you) in how it should be treated.

There are three items related to Sweden. First the screening on the Göteborg Film Festival. 2nd the Theatrical release (but shouldn’t this be Theatrical premiere according to what you wrote above).

As this is a Video film, I also want to add the DVD premiere on February 18, 2008, as this is before the Theatrical premiere. The 3rd item is the screening on the Stockholm Film Festival.

Karl: As to the issue of "theatrical release" as an attribute as compard to "theatrical premiere", see https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/release-dates/GVUUDEPJNAW6G35P# which says:

When a title initially released via video, TV, or online platform subsequently receives a limited theatrical release, use the (theatrical release) (limited) attributes.

I don't know why IMDb was inconsistent in making it (theatrical release) instead of (theatrical premiere); that decision might even have been inadvertent.

However, the guide says to use (theatrical release), and (theatrical release) is indeed used more than eight times as much as (theatrical premiere) -- there are 1,898 entries with (theatrical release) and only 227 with (theatrical premiere). So if I were dealing with a nontheatrical title that got a theatrical release, I would submit the attribute as (theatrical release).

As this is a Video film, I also want to add the DVD premiere on February 18, 2008, as this is before the Theatrical premiere.

Please do so, but use the attribute (DVD), not (DVD premiere), because this is a direct-to-video title, for which the attribute (DVD premiere) is not supposed to be used.
