#260516-044747-496000 - The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit
Two separate Goof items were submitted regarding the same issue; the first described why the submitter thought it was a Goof, while the second, rather than correcting the first, submitted information that contradicted the first. I marked the second item (fewer votes than the first item) to be deleted and added its text into the first item (and changed the category of Goof to "Incorrectly regarded as goof"). IMDb accepted the deletion ("This item refutes another, earlier submitted, item. It has been added to the original item.") but rejected the corrected item on the basis of "Does not meet contribution guidelines." However, that doesn't help me understand what is wrong with the submittal. Also, since the deletion was accepted, but the correction rejected, the correct information of why it is not a Goof is now lost.
Four other Goof edits also were rejected for the generic "Does not meet contribution guidelines.", but again, I cannot tell what the exact guideline is not followed:
- A "Factual Mistake" Goof was corrected to "Incorrectly regarded as goof" on the basis of artistic license and this being a work of fiction. As stated in Section C of the Goof Guidelines, for "Unintentional misapplications of truthiness." - "We also make big allowances for artistic license and suspension of disbelief", "Sometimes filmmakers play with reality because it's fun.", and 'In movies "based on real events" we also tend to disallow discrepancies between fact and fiction because these changes are usually made for dramatic reasons.' So based on the Guidelines, I don't understand what contribution guideline wasn't met.
- A "Character error" Goof regarding the mother leaving her young children alone was also rejected. Obviously, the reviewer didn't grow up in a small town in the 1950s or '60s as I did. It was a different era, and that was not an uncommon situation. Also, it's the scriptwriter's use of artistic license.
- Another "Factual Mistake" Goof because the soldier was in Italy after the war had ended. The U.S., in fact, had peacekeeping troops in Italy through 1947. The fighting was over, but there still were soldiers in Italy. What "submission guideline" should I review?
- And a final ""Factual Mistake" Goof (which, at best, might be a "Character error", or even a "Continuity error" (From Section C - "Errors in fact, not in the created universe. Please double check your facts before you submit. Many errors made by characters can be attributed to "character error".)
So if the Goof Guidelines that I cited above are not applicable, please let me know the specifically appropriate ones, so that I don't repeat the mistakes.
