Ten films made the Oscar shortlist in the International Feature Film category for the 92nd Academy Awards from ninety-one films that were deemed eligible.

International Feature Films vs. Foreign Language Films vs. Films Not in the English Language

Despite, now being known as the International Feature Film category. The Oscars category name change does not come with any alterations to existing category rules, submission process, or eligibility requirements. Although, the rules for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film differ from both the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Take The Farewell for instance. The acclaimed indie drama follows an American-raised woman (Awkwafina) who travels to China in order to say goodbye to her terminally ill grandmother. Based on the real-life experiences of writer-director Lulu Wang, who is Chinese-American, The Farewell is told primarily in Mandarin with English subtitles, though its protagonist also speaks English. Though ineligible for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars because it's an American production, the title's also barred from competing for Best Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes. Their rationale? It's a foreign-language film.

Seen two out of the five: Parasite and Pain and Glory. Honeyland (2019) is on Amazon Prime already ... so I'll grab watch that pretty soon. Les Misérables (2019) has begun its limited run this previous weekend at the Angelika. I will try and figure out how to see it in the up and coming two weeks.


I doubt any of these will top my favorite 2019 film, Parasite.
