funny...the very first name i thought of was major anthony nelson from 'i dream of jeannie', who you actually have on your list (too cool)... but...if i had to give a 'proper' answer, it would be either eleanor arroway (jodie foster) in 'contact' or tanya kirbuk (helen mirren) in '2010'...

FYC: maybe it could be an interesting idea to include Jim Preston from Passengers (2016).

Good suggestion, I thought of him too initially. But, there are hundred of astronauts characters between movies and TV. I had to place some restrictions and scale back the scope to focus on what most people think when they hear the term. Just going into space wasn't enough. So, I have restricted to crew members only and must be employed by a quasi-governmental space agency. No passengers, stowaways, or accidental astronauts. Although, I think I might need to open it up private corporation crew members since that seems to be the future, Space X, Weyland Corp. East Texas, etc. I also initially had (excludes passengers) specifically in my asterisk parameters; but removed it because I thought it was repetitive. I also wanted to include some early 40s and 50s sci-fi classics too but spots seem to be at a premium. Thanks, any feedback of how strict or liberal I should be on the list is appreciated, as well as, any seemingly obvious omissions *limited to fictional human NASA or other earth space agency characters and a maximum of two options per movie franchise or TV series (excludes passengers)

Better title: "Who had the Right Stuff?" If you went with the image poll you could combine multiple characters from individual titles and have more room to add other options. For example, you could have ALL the Space Cowboys in one option. FYC: The Robinsons from Lost in Space

Thanks, both are good suggestions. I especially like the title. I know the right stuff isn't unique to astronauts, but that group because of the book and movie, first comes to mind when I hear the term. I kinda covered the crew aspect already in a Best Spaceship Crew Team Chemistry poll for last year's National Astronaut Day. I even had The Robinsons from Lost in Space as an option, albeit I used the movie crew picture over the TV crew picture.

Where is Scott Glenn, who had the original Right Stuff?

Scott Glenn is doubly disqualified for inclusion in this poll Best Fictional Movie or TV Astronaut. He plays real life astronaut Alan Shepard (1923 -1998) in the true story biopic The Right Stuff (1983). The question twice mentions that the role and story need to be fictional to qualify. Which courageous fictional movie or TV astronaut* best exemplifies having the "right stuff"? *limited to fictional human NASA or other earth space agency characters However, I do agree that Scott Glen and his portrayal had the "right stuff". He has demonstrated that time and time again, in role after role, over his long career.

Hilary Swank to Star as an Astronaut in "Away" on Netflix According to The Wrap, Hilary Swank is about to play an astronaut in “Away,” Netflix’s upcoming 10-episode space drama, the streaming service tweeted Wednesday. The two-time Academy Award winner will play Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission to Mars. Loosely inspired by a 2014 Esquire article by Chris Jones, the series is about hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things, per Netflix.
