Live Poll: Morally Bankrupt Classic Movies

The Catholic Legion of Decency from 1933 to 1980 provided moral guidance to Americans, telling them which films were okay to see and which ones were not okay to see. The Catholic Legion of Decency was a powerful organization; their diligent efforts altered the content of some 16,251 films over a fifty year period. Despite their best efforts to eradicate morally questionable content over 150 movies still had to be condemned. Condemnation by the powerful Legion meant parishioners were forbidden by the church from attending a screening of the film under the notion that it was a mortal sin. The original Catholic Legion of Decency was merged into the reorganized United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Office for Film and Broadcasting in 1980 and still provides the same moral guidance for films to this day. 'Great poll! 'So many good films, too. I'd respectfully suggest just a couple little edits: Morally Bankrupt Movie Classic Movies (the first "movie" seems redundant) ...Condemnation by the powerful Legion meant parishioners were forbidden by the church from attending a screening of the film under the notion that it was a mortal sin... ('added "that") The intro. is really well written, by the way, and the information is really interesting. I was raised in a really Catholic home and went to Catholic school for twelve years but I didn't know most of what's in the introduction. 'Fascinating.

Thanks, I found it fascinating for the same reasons, how powerful and extensive the organization is and how little is known about them and their work. I will add a couple facts that I left out of the introduction. The Catholic News Service continues the same work to this day (see hyperlink in introduction). Recent movies that been labeled as "morally offensive" include: Logan, Moonlight, Fifty Shades Darker, Assassin's Creed, Underworld: Blood Wars, Office Christmas Party, The Edge of Seventeen, The Accountant, The Girl on the Train,Why Him? among others. The Catholic church is not unique in its zeal. Worldwide, there are similar religious and government organizations censoring films. They either require the removal of the offensive content or ban the film outright. Mostly, movies are banned for reasons that go against the beliefs of the dominant religion. Some, of these would seem to make no sense to those from outside that religion or culture, but the offense is understandable when looking beyond the surface (ie.Noah: depiction of the prophet, Ben-Hur: for "propaganda of superstitious beliefs, namely Christianity."). Just as often, censorship is more politically motivated by being critical of the church or the government (The Simpsons Movie: banned for "juxaposition of red and yellow in support of rebel forces", The Interview: for "dangerous filmmaking, which justifies and encourages terrorism", The Great Dictator: banned for mocking dictatorships) Thanks, I seem to be not adapting well to the new system, despite my best efforts. In my effort, to get it all right when posting a new poll suggestion and make sure I do everything right, I seem to be letting the more obvious mistakes slip by. I have added the "that", corrected the title and requested a re-push.

I think they also banned an obscure (deservedly so) comedy , "Kiss Me, Stupid".

8 1/2... or Taxi Driver... or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly... or Psycho I guess I'll go with whichever one gets the least votes (probably 8 1/2) so I don't have to actually decide, lol.
