Live Poll: Excellent Directors Who Never Won the Oscar

Alfred Hitchcock. The fact that he never did after being nominated five times is really sad. He had an Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, but that's not Oscar per se. Also, you have added Fellini two times on 11 and 12.

It's really tough to pick out of so many great directors but if I have to pick then I'll go with David Fincher.

My favourite director is Akira Kurosawa, but I think Hitchcock got more robbed, what with being English, and having been nominated five times.

Hm, what if you divvy this into those that have passed (Why didn't they win?) and those who are still alive (Who will win it first?)?

Hi Migjen / Chihir0 (which do you prefer? or do have another name or nickname that you'd rather be used?), I remember you from the old poll board and it's good to see around here lately. :) My vote: Most surprising? Probably Hitchcock. "Most deserving" is much more difficult to answer (but I like polls with tough choices and think that the results are more interesting). This is a good poll and I like it a lot. May I suggest a few edits? (below in bold) Even though they were some of the greatest directors of all time, none ever won an Oscar for directing. Which do you find the most surprising?

Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock are on top two. But Hitchcock was extraordinary director. Psycho (1960) is my second favorite film.
