Updates to the Ratings pages and functionality

Today we have made several updates to our Ratings pages and functionality. We have improved the design of the ratings details page to give it a cleaner, more modern look.

We have also made several changes, listed below. These changes only impact the Your Ratings page on the IMDb desktop Website. You may find much of this information by creating and running custom searches on the AdvancedTitle Search page. For example, to see comedy titles you have rated, sorted by your rating, see this advancedsearch. Or, to see titles you have rated that are in the IMDb Top250 list, see this advancedsearch.

What did we change?

1.     We removed the Compact list view. This was accessible from the far right icon (see A in the screen capture below). The grid view and detailed list view are still available.

2.     We updated the “Sort by” dropdown box. It now provides the two most popular choices: Most Recent (previously called Recently Rated) and Top Rated (previously Your Rating). Sort by: Your rating, Title A-Z, Release date (US),Number of votes, IMDb rating, and Popularity were removed. See B in the screen capture below.

3.     We removed the Refine ratings filters options from the Your Ratings page on the desktop site. See C in the screen capture below.

4.     We removed the Find More Titles tab. See D in the screen capture below.

5.     We removed the Recommended for You section on the User/Ratings page.

6.     We changed the format of data in the Ratings Export. You can export your ratings to Excel by clicking the new overflow menu (the 3 vertical dots) above your list in the updated experience, and choosing Export.

There are many ways to find new titles to watch. IMDb users can use Advanced Search, look through the recommendations for new titles to watch under People who liked this also liked... on any title page, or see Top Rated Movies.

Thank you for your continued support.

Thank you for the ongoing feedback on ratings (and a reminder to see https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/upcoming-changes-to-several-imdb-features-du6man1opd5q0 for the wider context).

This is an update for January 19. Already implemented:
  • We switched "Load more" to "Previous | Next" pagination
  • We addressed issues with the export of large ratings lists
  • We added "Date of Your Rating" sorts (in both directions) to advanced search at http://www.imdb.com/search/title
  • We fixed a bug to preserve the sort order beyond page one
This work is in-progress between now and the end of March:
  • 'Filter by ratings number' so you can see everything you have rated a certain number, e.g., all titles you have rated '8'  [DONE]
  • 'Add date of ratings' so you can see when you rated a title [DONE]

Ideas for the long term:

Please bear with us while we work through the above list (and equivalent lists for other impacted features). Our aim remains to make IMDb the best place to rate movies, shows (and other title types) both on the web and on mobile.

IMDb user Dan Dassow has compiled a useful tutorial on using ratings (and other features) at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/tutorial-workarounds

Finally, please note that ratings can be filtered and sorted via advanced title search at http://www.imdb.com/search/title via the "Your Ratings" section using the option "Restrict to titles I've seen" -- search results there can be saved as bookmarks/favorites.

Just a FYI on this; the options for both directions are there, but both options yield an ascending list, so one of the ways is not working as intended. The same applies to "Your rating", both options yielding ascending lists (low to high).

At last! Export of my ratings works. I could not do that since I have had about 10,000+ rated titles, and now it works! Great news!

Any word on whether or not the ability to refine lists by height will be reinstated?

Hi Cartman_1337. Thx for pointing that out -- it's a quick fix so we're working on it now. You can still change the sort order on the results page too.

Hi Paul. Refine by height isn't currently on our list of planned updates. The team does watch the Ideas threads on GetSat, so you may want to add it there for future consideration.

Karen, why was it taken away?  The ability to sort by height was around for 15 years existed until 2-3 weeks ago.  One could look at the list of people born on any particular day and one of the sort parameters was "height:".  One could click on people's lists and one of the sort parameters was 'height'.  So, I wouldn't consider it an update so much as restoring ability that should never have been taken away.

I am still waiting for a response to my comment about why the ability to sort by height was removed after 15 years of being available.

Great news, thanks a lot.

Could you return at the top right of the any list the percent chart  of voted titles?

On my screens, which are 15.6", this information is on its OWN double-spaced line.

We don't need these listings to be longer. This should have been placed NEXT to the rating itself. It would easily fit even if you gave us back the graphical representation of our rating AND the average user rating,

not really helpful when you have to scroll through a few thousand titles...

Hi @sss sss. We aren't working on bringing that back right now, but I will add it to our list for future consideration. Thanks for suggesting.

Hi @bderoes. Thanks for your continued feedback. The page design is still a little in flux as we continue to make updates; the placement isn't final.

Good to hear the placement isn't final.

As Larry Yoshida points out, having this data here has limited use without the Refine and Sort features of a custom list.

I have always had to keep an Export of my ratings on my laptop just to answer the question "when did I see this film last?" If the date of rating were shown on the title page, that would be very useful. So would showing it on a custom list (#6). But hopefully always with an eye to keep the display as small as possible without confusion.

P.S. I'm glad to see you're providing weekly status reports, and especially that you did so before Friday so you can respond to comments more quickly.

Hi Karen,

It's sad to hear and see that the date you are publishing or providing, is the date when I rated a title, THE LAST TIME. Instead, you should provide the date when a user rated the title for THE FIRST TIME. This is for two reasons:-
  • This functionality is not properly implemented. There is a bug. So, if I just visit a title which I have already rated in d past without changing or even touching the rating, the system takes it as if or assumes that, I've rated the title again. So, the title appears top on the list of my ratings when sorted by date of rating.
  • Many times it happens that I change my rating for a title. So, the date when I rated the title for the first time, will provide me with a very useful information and that is the date or approximate period/time when I watched the title for the very first time.
Hoping this will be changed for the good,
Thanks.

I don't find that the date of rating changes just because I visit the title page. You say you're not doing anything to make the voting stars come up, tapping on the former rating, and therefore registering a new date? Are you using Reference view, or an app on a phone/tablet? (I use Standard view on a laptop.)

I disagree that the rating date displayed should always be the first date. If I've changed my rating, I want to know the date of the current rating. I _would_ be interested in both dates: original and current. However, I doubt that IMDb keeps the original rating number, and without that, the original date is the less valuable of the two... for me.

Hi everyone. Here is the update for the week ending Feb 9:
  • You can now filter by rating on the ratings page. For example, you can see all titles you rated 8 stars.

On the Ratings page, filter by rating does NOT sort by date, despite the Sort choice saying Most Recent.

By looking through my recent ratings (without selecting a Filter value), I find 4 films that I rated 8 in the last month. But when I select Filter by rating 8, these do not appear at the top of the list, and the top 3 entries have rated dates in 2014, 2006, 2012.

Hi @bderoes. Another item we will clean up soon. I will update the announcement to make the current limitation clear.

Filtering by a single rating seems pointless, usually it makes sense to filter by a range of ratings (min: 6, max: 10, for example), like in the Advanced search. The inconsistency of filtering between the search, lists and ratings is very confusing.

Also the current capitalization style (camelCase) of URL parameters clashes with the old IMDb style (snake_case): /ratings?sort=date_added,desc&ratingFilter=6

This is inconvenient because often the lack of a capable UI for filtering/sorting forces me to edit or add those parameters manually, and mixing two styles makes it much harder.

I see more changes today: that an icon for Grid View is included and functional.

Also that when you select a rating value to filter, the box regarding "Most Recent" is eliminated, and the titles are displayed in random order. Hopefully this is not the permanent version of the page, because the random order is the primary problem, not that it was advertised as being in order.

New Bug: I tried to find a title in my Ratings today, to see when I rated it. To speed up the process, I switched to Grid View to find the title, thinking I'd be able to switch to Detail View when I got to the page. But tapping on that grayed-out icon does Nothing. This is too many flavors of ridiculous wrapped in one PITA: only 1 place to advance to Next page,  random order of titles, inability to switch view modes, only 2 ways to see the date reviewed (export and random ratings view; need it on custom lists and on Title page.) Fortunately, it dawned on me to delete the view mode from the url, and refresh, which worked.

The grayed-out Detail View was in Chrome on a Chromebook, with extensions/scripts OFF.

Hi everyone. One small announcement for the week ending Feb 16. We updated the dual sort/filter drop downs that were causing some confusion last week. You can now filter by Show All and choose to sort by Most Recent or Top Rated OR you can filter by a specific star rating.

We are continuing to work on additional updates to Ratings and I will announce those once they are available.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your patience and feedback as we've released Ratings features over the past 3 months. This will be the last of the weekly updates to this announcement thread, but please keep adding ideas for future Ratings ideas here: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb?topic-list[settings][type]=idea I'll post new announcements on Get Satisfaction as we release new features and functionality in the future.

This sounds like bad news. It seems you're not actively updating the Ratings page any more, is that right?
Also, you say that ideas can be added to the Idea section, does that mean the ideas and suggestions mentioned in this thread that haven't been acted upon yet won't get acted upon at all?

Some of the Ratings enhancement requests were recorded here:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/ratings-functionality-enhancement-requests
Votes and/or comments are welcome there.

User Jeorj Euler has frequently expressed optimism in this thread that some former functionality was going to return, perhaps based on this post by  Karen, Official Rep on 19Jan:

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/updates-to-the-ratings-pages-and-functionality?topic-reply-l...

which said in part:

Ideas for the long term:
But notice these are user Ideas that need votes.

Or perhaps this, posted 23Feb:
We will have news about Ratings updates soon and I'll post when those are available.
