Updates to List Pages

Today (Dec 6) we are announcing an update to the List pages on the IMDb desktop experience. This update is part of the broader site changes announced recently (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/upcoming-changes-to-several-imdb-features-du6man1opd5q0). After in-depth discussion and examination, we have decided to simplify the features and functionality for lists. We have merged “compact view” and list editing into a single Edit experience. In that one view, you can now modify your text and add, copy, delete and move items. We have also pulled List actions (edit, export, settings) together into a 1-click menu (the 3 vertical dots on the top right of the page). You will now also find two new options in the Refine menu: ‘In Theaters’ and ‘Keywords.’  Tech constraints on the new system prohibit us from continuing to support drag-and-drop from the Edit view; we appreciate your understanding. For more information about Lists, see the IMDb Help Center.

Who are these people that you, amazon.com and Netflix employ to "improve" your websites?  I've enjoyed imdb.com for 17 years.  It's always been a basic website.  Please leave it that way.  It doesn't need to look nicer.  It needs to be functional.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Using the IMDb list to add titles is a lot more troublesome now, especially addin....

I am sure that there has been plenty of criticism about some of the recent changes made to IMDb, something that is inevitable when such a large platform undergoes changes. I also understand that this one post alone will probably not bring forth the changes that I hope for but nevertheless, I'd like to list some issues I have been having with the site over the past couple of days.

Firstly, I must say that I really love implementing the IMDb star rating and # of votes into both customized lists and episode lists as found for the TV shows. I love that interface and I think it works wonderfully. However, what I am not so much a fan of are some of the changes made to the list editing mode. I can no longer add a TV episode by pasting the URL of the episode into the 'Add a movie or TV show to this list'. That was a convenience I loved about adding episode titles onto IMDb and without that convenience, it's really no different to how Trakt.tv works with customized lists. Now I have to go through each title on its own separate page and add the episode from there.

I also think the editing mode on IMDb is a lot more problematic now and found the earlier interface in-editing mode to be much clearer. This is clearly a less pressing issue for me and once again, I welcome the addition of the star rating with open arms.

I also wish we had the 'list' mode (or whatever it was called) for reading a list. I'm not sure how commonly used it was by users but I personally loved it, especially when I wanted to go through a list at a quick pace. I also found it a much easier way to actually organize items within a list and I hate the fact that it's now gone. The list mode was something I also used when I wanted to browse custom lists for a TV show (say favourite episodes of [insert show]) without spoiling for myself episodes and/or pivotal moments as there was no thumbnail on the list mode.

Anyways, I love some of the changes and don't love some of the others. I would hope that there's the possibility of at least restoring the list mode AND the ability to add TV episodes in editing mode by pasting the URLs.

Yes I believe you're referring to compact mode and yes I agree with my post above.  IMDB wants users to click on the title that links to Amazon.  Which is fine but they can easily do that with compact mode as well by adding a watch now hyperlink.  Hope they reconsider bringing this back this mode.

Not being able to drag and drop is a terrible idea! I change the order of my lists frequently and the method of putting the order number in doesn't work. Please restore the drag and drop feature or I will no longer use the lst feature as it is useless to me without it.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Why remove a feature with no replacement?.

Why remove a feature with no replacement? The compact view was the only way I could tell the date of when I added a movie to my list. Now I can only sort by date added but no way for me to tell for example if I added it to the list more than 3 months ago or not. This is a feature I used weekly to help me sort my movie list. Another feature that would be nice is if I could see the Popularity Score on the preview screen instead of needing to click through on each movie. I don't keep movies in my library higher than a particualar score. Thank you. please add the date added or compact view back or something similar.

Hi Duane Goodwin,

Until we can convince the IMDb Technical staff to restore the compact view and/or to show the date added in the full view, there is a work around. You can export the list to a CSV (comma separated variable) and read the file back in via Excel or Open Office. "Created" is the date that an entry was added.

These are the data fields in the exported CSV file:
  • Position
  • Const
  • Created
  • Modified
  • Description
  • Title
  • URL
  • Title Type
  • IMDb Rating
  • Runtime (mins)
  • Year
  • Genres
  • Num Votes
  • Release Date
  • Directors
I fully agree this is much less convenient and a lot more work, but at least it is a work around.

I don't get it, why u removed the compact view? I used it for my watchlist and a personal list called "Upcoming movies", to have a fine and clean overview of the most important informations I needed to know. Now I have a bunch of useless infos like a poster, synopsis or crew and I need to scroll so many lines now that is insane.
If you believe people like this kind of view, its fine to add it, but why on earth do u remove importand stuff like the compact view for a list feature?

Before the update, when you went to edit a list with episodes, it would show the name of the show as well as the title of the episode while you were editing it.  This was really convenient because I generally don't like putting two episodes from the same show too close together in my lists.  Now, we can only see the title of the episode so you don't necessarily know which show the episode is from while you're editing the list and it just makes the whole process more confusing and lengthy (e.g. if an episode just says "Pilot" it's very hard to figure out what show that's from).  Also, please strongly consider giving us back the ability to drag and drop.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Can't edit watchlist.

After the latter changes, I can't edit my watchlist. I get an 500 error. The list is private and has 10000 titles. I can edit the rest of my lists but they have much less titles.

One more question. Why can I sort lists in the edit page just by "list order" and "date added"? I regular move movies from a list called "Upcoming movies" to "Watchlist" if they have more than 1000 votes. This sorting was possible with the old (better!!!) list feature. Now its impossible to me to sort AND move movies from this list, so its more or less useless. Neither "list order" nor "date added" helps me, to move the movies with more than 1000 votes.

So please add more sorting options to the edit page.

Thank you.

This is a perfect application for Advanced Title Search, whether you choose Compact or Detailed output; tap on the Watchlist icon to the right of the title and the title is added to the Watchlist.

I guess you not really got the point I was making. I was talking about moving movies from one list to another list.
For example, I have a custom list called "Upcoming Movies" where I put any upcoming movies I may want to watch, so I can keep track of them. In my Watchlist there are only released movies I really want to watch. From time to time I check the "Upcoming Movies" list, if any of them are released and how the user rating is. Then I decide what movies I want to watch, move them to my Watchlist and delete the rest.
This only works, if I can sort the edit Page of the Lists by "Number of Votes" or "IMDB Rating", otherwise I have to check the whole list of movies one by one, what is really anyoing and time-cosuming.
With the old design I was able to do all of this very easily.

@JonDoe

It's true that my suggestion doesn't completely satisfy your concerns, although you don't have to check your list one by one to determine if the title is ready to move; the List sort has a Number of Votes option. But yes, then you have to hunt for those titles within your list.

For the IMDb execs, let's point out that even after using ATS to find and copy titles to the Watchlist, there is NO way to sort the ATS list in one of the ways that Edit mode sorts the origin list (List Order, Date Added) to give Position within the list. And when you sort the list outside of Edit mode, it renumbers everything, so you still don't know the position in order to remove it. So not only do you have to remove the titles by hand, but you have no way of knowing where they are in the original list.

I added your suggestion (merged with Pete's suggestion below) to the running lists I'm keeping of Bugs and of Suggestions as
16. Add the Refine sort options to Edit mode to facilitate Move To selection and List Order changes.

The Official Reps may be ignoring those lists, but I want to see how things develop with this feature of IMDb.

I agree with JonDoe regarding sorting lists.

When in EDIT mode, please allow sort function by ALPHABETICAL. This is currently available only when in NON-EDIT mode (see below).

It would save me lots of time to edit movies in my list if I could search for them in alphabetical order

I have a list of 1338 movies. I wanted to exclude one of these movies and I couldn't find it, because there is no more the basic ALPHABETICAL order in the edit mode. I can't believe in how many wrong things you guys did with these changes. It's really incredible. Not even the correct IMDb rating order we can see in the lists anymore. It's just a blending of rating and popularity that misleads people and you don't even care to warn them. Please, please, please. Bring back the old lists system, where we can FIND a movie and where we can put the lists in a correct rating order.

Hi Angelo Pilla,

Here is a work around until the IMDb Technical Staff restores the ability to sort lists by other than alphabetical order. Admittedly, this is not as convenient as being able to do this on the list page.

You can sort your list various ways using the Advanced Title Search.

1. From the drop down menu next to the search box, select Advanced Search.

2. On the Advanced Search select Advanced Title Search.

3. Under Lists Include: select one of your title lists.

4. Under Display Options, you can choose:
4a. Detailed or Compact
4b. 50 or 100 titles per page for Detailed, 100 or 250 title per page for Compact.
4c. Sorted by

5. Click the yellow Search button.

For example, this is one of my title lists:
Lowest Rated Titles In Your "305 Films Qualified for Oscars in 2015" List
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?lists=ls031350281&sort=user_rating,asc&view=simple

If you want to remove one title from a list, just go to the title page, hover over the + for Watchlist, and select the list from which you want to delete the title.

@Angelo Pilla
Separate issue: sort by ratings. I was able to duplicate what you're reporting. I happen to have 100 titles in one of my lists that all have IMDb average rating of "6.9", and when I have ATS sort by User/IMDb Rating, I get the same sequence as when I ask for Popularity sort.

When I clicked the reverse order link on User Rating, it had no effect. (Reversing Popularity works.)

Then I checked to see if sort by UR is just dead in ATS, and expanded to 6.8-6.9, and it managed to separate the 6.8's from the 6.9's, but used popularity within those.

Using the Refine and Sort options on the List page itself gave the same results.

I did include your report as #9 on the Bug list I set up 3 days ago above this comment:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/update-to-list-pages?utm_source=notification&utm_medium=...

Of course, IMDb is likely ignoring that list, and maybe all the posts to this thread by now.

Hi Angelo Pilla,

The main flaw in this workaround is that you cannot move a movie from one list to another list. There is no selection box to click, as there is in the current list Edit mode.

So although I am able to find a particular movie in one of my lists, I'm not able to move it... say, from "2017" to "Saw 2017."

In other words, a step in the right direction, but still not a satisfactory workaround. The best solution would be: When in EDIT mode, allow sort function by ALPHABETICAL.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Watchlist.

Currently 8709 in my watch list, 71 not rated. Advanced search a faff and doesn't give me same options I previously had.
This is a fantastic website despite recent sell out to advertising and now invasive selling in how we use our own watch lists.
By all means add 'where to watch' to please don't take away 'you and your list' options.
Thanks.

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: I can't sort my watchlist by movies I haven't rated yet.

Color formatting is particularly useful for the Christmas holidays. This poll suggestion list effectively makes use of the colors green and red.

Unfortunately, if the author were to edit this list, the color formatting will disappear.

Two questions. (And complains.)

1. Are the video lists deprecated now? I can not create a new list for videos--there's no option on list creation page, only for titles, persons, and images.

2. What the hell the new category "Pending Lists" means? Who is doing this "pending"? I'm not. I started only public or private listings, no pending listings at all, but some of my public lists are not public but "pending".

#2. I've seen Pending when I didn't do the Save list step somehow. I just edit the list and Save it, and Pending goes away.

I just made it happen when I created a title list, then left the page without hitting Done first.

Thank you, bderoes! DONE button was ignored by me. But it works for "publicing" the public list as public. :)

But what about video lists? Can you help with them, please?

IMDb staff have put together video lists, most notably for videos related to San Diego Comic Con. I tried without success to create video lists prior to IMDb's update to list functionality.

OK here's one more suggestion if IMDB could be so inclined to at least address no compact view...  if they could at least increase the edit mode from 100 titles per page to 250 per page?  Would that be too much to ask?

Don't get me wrong I still would really like the compact mode back and it makes me very frustrated that its gone.  But can someone at least meet us half way on this?

I would argue AGAINST having 250 titles on the Edit page. It's already cumbersome to get to the navigation and copy/move etc links on bottom and top of a list page. If the page had more entries, it would be worse, even if we had duplicate links on top and bottom of the page. Because edit mode has too many lines per entry.

I understand the advantage of finding titles to create a move or copy list, but it would hurt more than it would help IMO.

I can only hope IMDb is going to add Sort and Refine features within Edit mode. I'm certainly going to procrastinate breaking apart my 577 title list into Features and Shorts for a while, in the hope they're secretly working on just such enhancements, Had I known this Update to the List system was coming, and what we were losing, when I assembled those 577 titles 1 week ago, I would have done it differently.

Now 'tis better to create short lists that can be merged than to create long lists that need disaggregating.

54 Messages

If anything it would be easier finding entries on one page rather than multiple.  I mean what if it was only 10 titles per page?  Would that be less cumbersome too?

But in any case at least give us the compact mode 250 titles per page.  More viewing options not less.  I just don't get it.

Have you done much editing with the new Update, scrolling back and forth among the 100 entries? And you want it to be 2.5 times longer?

What would be the advantage of having more titles on the page at once? You must have a specific situation in mind. And do you have a monitor in Portrait orientation?

54 Messages

 •

I don't see the advantage in less titles per page in edit mode.  What if they decreased it to 10 or 5 titles per page and say if you have a list of over 500 titles...  how would that be easier to edit?  To a lesser extent the same situation with 100 instead of 250.

Again in any case we wouldn't be having this discussion if they didn't take away compact mode (250 titles per page).  Which they should bring back.

I don't understand how less options to customize the appearance of a user's personal list is better.

Oh, if we're talking about Options, so that I can have only 100 titles when I'm doing X kind of editing, and 250 when I doing Y, and I can select them according to my needs, then that would be superb.

But the original idea was expressed as
"OK here's one more suggestion if IMDB could be so inclined to at least address no compact view...  if they could at least increase the edit mode from 100 titles per page to 250 per page?"
Since we DON'T have compact mode in that scenario (and I would vote FOR having compact mode, as would the author, it seems), then each title consumes a minimum of 4 lines without comments (contrasted with 2 in Compact mode), and more depending on the length of the comment (which Compact mode only displayed as a popup).  With the existing 100 titles, I'm finding that it takes a LOT of laborious scrolling to get from near the top of the list to near the bottom, even when I use a nifty trackpad that scrolls like a phone/tablet.

True compact mode with 250 titles on a page: Yes.
New Edit mode with 250 titles on a page: Yikes.
