Updates to List Pages

Today (Dec 6) we are announcing an update to the List pages on the IMDb desktop experience. This update is part of the broader site changes announced recently (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/upcoming-changes-to-several-imdb-features-du6man1opd5q0). After in-depth discussion and examination, we have decided to simplify the features and functionality for lists. We have merged “compact view” and list editing into a single Edit experience. In that one view, you can now modify your text and add, copy, delete and move items. We have also pulled List actions (edit, export, settings) together into a 1-click menu (the 3 vertical dots on the top right of the page). You will now also find two new options in the Refine menu: ‘In Theaters’ and ‘Keywords.’  Tech constraints on the new system prohibit us from continuing to support drag-and-drop from the Edit view; we appreciate your understanding. For more information about Lists, see the IMDb Help Center.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Accents displayed as HTML code in links..

I've encountered a strange issue with accents in a title link, in a list i created.
On my IMdB user page, the title link is OK:

But in the full page list, the accent in the title are displayed in HTML code.
Morover, the year of the movie is not shown in the link:

I'm using the latest version of Firefox on Windows 8.1.

Hi, Pascal Guillen. A number of subscribers have repeatedly pointed out the exact same display bug, and not once has it be acknowledged by the IMDb staff in the slightest, in regards to IMDb user reviews. The problem is also present in a number of Plot Synopses and Parents Guides. Somebody in the company did, however, finally fix this in regards to title FAQ pages. The items you have circled/highlighted are known as markup character entity references.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled IMDb lists.

Mr. Needham: PLEASE go back to the old format(s)! I can't find anything/can't organize my lists b/c the click-and-drag feature is gone! Who's idea was this?! If it ain't broke DON'T fix it!

Name/title linking is now IMPOSSIBLE! It took me much-longer to link names to make sure I didn't repeat a name! Do YOU know who is nm=0000129 is off the top of your head? Give up? It's Tom Cruise! PLEASE return to (qv) format!

Judging by the responses, if you DO NOT return to the old format(s), you'll lose TONS of contributors -- including me!

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Update to User Reviews.

We definitely need a preview mode to see if we got the right link.
And it's not nm=stuff.
It's [link=nm0000129].
Until a preview mode is provided, I open a list of mine in a second tab, and paste what I'm contributing into a comment field to see how it displays.

It's miserable, but I wasn't a fan of the old system.  To disambiguate in the (qv) system meant opening the name page of my intended credit and noting which Roman numeral was by their name.

But now I need to see if my paragraph was composed correctly. Preview Please?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Unable to remove films from my list???.

Since today or yesterday, I'm unable to remove a film from my 2019 - Most Anticipated list (since one titled was moved to 2020). How come this simple function is not available anymore??? Surely this IT Supporter must have overlooked something? Or I can't believe my own eyes.

Best regards.

Hi Thomas,

I'm assuming that you are doing this from the IMDb web page. This functionality is slightly different for mobile devices.

Please follow these steps to remove a title from a title list.

1. Make certain you are logged into your account.
2. Go to the list page you wish to edit.
3. Click the three vertical dots. Three options should appear:
  • Edit
  • Export
  • Settings
4. Click Edit. You should see the list with check boxes in front of the titles.
5. Click the boxes of the titles you wish to delete. You should see a blue check in those boxes. The links for MOVE TO COPY TO and DELETE should become active.
6. Click DELETE.You should see a dialogue box asking:
Are you sure you want to delete?
7. Click DELETE in the dialogue box. The titles should be deleted from the page.
8. Click the blue DONE button.

Probably due to excessive bandwidth consumption. I don't know.

I suspect that the IMDb Technical Staff completely rewrote the list functionality and did not consider including the RSS feed for lists in the rewrite specifications.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled List RSS No Longer Working.

The RSS feed for my list is gone. Using the RSS URL now returns the desktop version of the list versus the valid XML. Have you decided to stop supporting RSS for lists?

Here is the URL I have been using: http://rss.imdb.com/list/ls004040167/

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled reodering created lists.

Hi! I wanted to ask how can I reorder the lists that I have created on
the website? Since the update few months ago, I can't drag and reorder
lists, and if I reorder by switching the numbers of 2 titles and save,
it says "an error occured while saving". What should I do?

I used to reorder titles and other added stuff in lists by drag-dropping them to the position I want, but now after the newly designed page I can only reorder the items by typing the numbers of the positions I want which is really frustrating and takes a lot of time. Please bring draging and dropping back, it's way easier and more practical to use.

The Dec 6 Update eliminated the You Have Seen bar. But you can determine that info by using the Refine feature (just above 1st title), selecting You and This List > Titles I Rated.

I know, not nearly as convenient, but at least the option is still there.

It's a shame the drag-drop hasn't come back, it was the nicest feature of the lists; overall this update seems rather a step back than forward to me

Drag-and-drop is available in the iOS app if you have access to an iPhone or iPad.  The list implementation on iOS is the best and our long term plan is to bring the other list interfaces up to the same consistent high standard as iOS.

Thanks, I will check it out. What would also be of help is if we could automatically sort lists with persons, mostly directors in my case, by their last name. Right now it is only possible to sort by 'date added'.

To whom it may concern

If I understand Col Needham's post correctly, does that mean drag-and-drop will once again be implemented across the board?

Somewhere in the replies to this topic, I think, it is mentioned that implementation of drag-and-drop on the desktop renditions would be sadly contingent upon implementation of D&D on the mobile renditions.

Hi Jeorj Euler

Thanks for the feedback. So I take it, there is a possibility it may be implemented. As mentioned above; "Drag-and-drop is available in the iOS app... " So it stands to reason desktop renditions should follow. Or am I misunderstanding?

Thanks for your help Jeorj.

Hey Jeorj, nothing to do with these comments: I just wanted to thank you for liking so many of my posts, if for no other reason than it's the only way I get a copy of them!

I'm still using your compact-a-list bookmarklet. I thought I saw another one days later, but lost it. What did that one do?

I did post an earlier bookmarklet pertaining to how messages' posting dates show up on Get Satisfaction, since ACT_1 keeps asking IMDb staff members to include the date of posting in their announcements. Please see reply no. 19,100,256 and the replies to it.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled My Lists.

Over the past 7 or 8 years, I have created close to a hundred lists to which I refer very often.  These lists are still available to me, but I am no longer able to sort them by IMDb rating, my personal rating, alphabetically, by release date, etc.  Also, I had each of my lists defaulted to a list view without visuals and this feature is no longer available.  My understanding is that there are fundamental changes in process.  Will these features return at some point or are they gone forever?  If the latter, I am extremely disappointed.  Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

Although this is significantly less convenient, you can use an Advanced Title Search to sort any title list in rating order. If you are logged in, you will see under Lists Include: a list of your title lists.

1. Select one of your lists under Lists Include.
2. Select User Rating Descending (or other sorting options) under Display Options.
3. Click the yellow Search button.

For example, this is one of my lists sorting in descending order of user ratings:
Highest Rated Titles In Your "All 151 Oscar-Qualifying Documentaries for 2013" List
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?lists=ls052183003&sort=user_rating,desc

... and, yes, this is much less convenient than being able to do this on the page of the list.

Thank you very much, Dan!  Once I posted this, IMDb alerted me that my post had been merged with this lengthy, substantial conversation.  It has been helpful to read so many other comments with frustrations similar to my own.  I'm all for healthy change, but hopefully things will continue to "improve" for those of us who liked things the way they were!  ;-)

I totally agree.  Nobody here is saying there shouldn't be any changes.  We all understand that for the most part.  Its the nature of the internet.  What's annoying is taking away useful features like what you mentioned above.  I have a list of 1,000 movies and to view and edit them now is unbearably tedious now that compact mode is gone.  I have to search through ten pages (instead of 4) every time I want to review my list but what's worse is I can only see 2 titles on my computer screen at a time instead of 25.  Editing mode isn't much better at all especially if you have reviews or notes that just take up more space.  I don't care to even look at other lists anymore because I can only see tiny bits and pieces at a time.  Its like looking at a painting 1/4 inch in front of my face.

I'm just curious why IMDB viewed compact mode as a useless feature?  What is the reasoning behind getting rid of it?  What would have been the harm in keeping that feature available?  Is it because people won't see a link to Amazon's video?  IMDB would still be able to do that in compact mode by adding a hyperlink.  Also of course that wouldn't apply to people, video game lists, etc.  Was it too much work for them to include that feature when they updated the site?  I don't want to export my list and adjust/edit the excel file just so I can see my lists from a reasonable distance.  Please someone help me understand.  This was a fun daily hobby of mine and now its totally ruined.  Please someone reconsider bringing back compact mode (250 titles per page)!  IMDB has their top 250 on one page why can't their users have that preference as well?  Thank you and Merry Christmas to all IMDB staff members.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled User Lists: Then & Now.

2017 is coming to a close. In retrospect, here is a list of changes to user-lists that have been implemented over the years:

The Comments Section
Then: An exclusive IMDb feature that proved to be a great mode of communication for members.
Now: Scrapped in favor of Facebook.
Result: If you like it or not, if you want to answer comments and communicate with others, you have no choice but to create a Facebook account. In my case, Facebook has not improved or promoted communication in comparison to the original system.

The Related Lists Feature
Then: Regardless of the length of a particular list. It would appear on the User Lists feature, visible on that title page.
Now: Where many lists are created in respect to a particular title - only lists in the low two-digit numbers appear on a particular page. This also applies to all other Related Lists where longer lists are excluded. Number of votes are taken into account in relation to entries on a particular list and if that list exceeds a particular total, it does not appear listed there.
Lists without subject, description, or relevance to anything, but a set of random titles takes precedence over well-researched, relevant lists. For example: 'To Download', 'Movies', 2017', 'Wish', 'To Watch' etc. etc. add little to nothing to the IMDb experience. Those IMDb members that truly contribute and bring legitimacy to this site, in regards to the content of their lists, (and there are a number of them) are however discouraged by the limitations imposed on them.
The new changes also exclude list descriptions that were previously available. A handy feature that informs of the content of a list without having to play roulette for the desired outcome of what you are looking for in a list of another.

DVD & Blu-ray and Genres
Then: Both the DVD & Blu-ray and Genres sections of the site had a feature where IMDb members could create their own lists with the option to "tag" and have their lists openly displayed in that section.
Now: Scapped.

Drag & Drop
Then: A necessary component of the user-list. Especially for longer lists and listees who are very specific in regards to placement of titles, and who update their lists on a constant basis, accordingly.
Now: Scrapped for a time-consuming, laborious, and impractical, number system editing feature.

Compact View
Then: A fast and effective means of reviewing a list. Especially handy for the list creator.
Now: Scrapped.

Scrolling Speed
Then: Freeflowing
Now: Jerky, occasionally freezes, slow. The same applies to editing, with the addition of the disappearance of the entire page which then manifests itself after a couple of seconds.

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/people/col_needham : "...lists are a core feature of IMDb and are from where IMDb originates..."
