Updates to List Pages

Today (Dec 6) we are announcing an update to the List pages on the IMDb desktop experience. This update is part of the broader site changes announced recently (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/upcoming-changes-to-several-imdb-features-du6man1opd5q0). After in-depth discussion and examination, we have decided to simplify the features and functionality for lists. We have merged “compact view” and list editing into a single Edit experience. In that one view, you can now modify your text and add, copy, delete and move items. We have also pulled List actions (edit, export, settings) together into a 1-click menu (the 3 vertical dots on the top right of the page). You will now also find two new options in the Refine menu: ‘In Theaters’ and ‘Keywords.’  Tech constraints on the new system prohibit us from continuing to support drag-and-drop from the Edit view; we appreciate your understanding. For more information about Lists, see the IMDb Help Center.

Reordering a List.
I have a list of 91 titles that I want clustered by vague concepts that I don't want to try to name.
So I exported the list to a spreadsheet, cut/paste into the clusters, assigned new position numbers, and tried to move them.

I started with the cluster that was supposed to end the list. Here was the intended mapping:
1 >> 79
3 >> 80
5 >> 81
17 >> 82
23 >> 83
28 >> 84
33 >> 85
34 >> 86
52 >> 87
53 >> 88
72 >> 89
78 >> 90
89 >> 91
I entered these all at once, and double checked my entries before hitting Save Ordered List.
Here was the result (I left in the intended numbers for comparison):
1 >> 79 >>> 68
3 >> 80 >>> 70
5 >> 81 >>> 72
17 >> 82 >>> 74
23 >> 83 >>> 76
28 >> 84 >>> 78
33 >> 85 >>> 80
34 >> 86 >>> 82
52 >> 87 >>> 84
53 >> 88 >>> 86
72 >> 89 >>> 61
78 >> 90 >>> 66
89 >> 91 >>> 85
I was moving 11 items; the first title is off by 11, the second by 10, the third by 9, etc. until title 72. I can sort of imagine what happened to the first 8 (they each lost a slot by their own movement.). But the last 3? No clue. And I have a degree in Computer Science from long ago.

I'm sure that if I had assigned these 11 positions 92-103 they would have landed fine. But that wouldn't help me with the next cluster up.

I'm going to export the list, match the new positions to my titles, and try to move a cluster to the top of the list instead. I'll report back with the results. HOPEFULLY, because the new position is supposed to "insert before the current holder of this position", moving up will work better than moving down.

Your "merge of compact view and list editing into a single Edit experience" is a TOTAL SLOW FEST. To add few items to a 218 titles list and to place them properly takes a ten times (if not twenty or even thirty) more time and efforts. The IMDb web developers are absolute UNPROFESSIONAL in holding the usability on at least the same level. The opening my list in an edit mode now means the loading of hundred full sized posters and it's SLOW. I cannot add title to first page of my list without opening the last page and it's SLOW. I cannot add a comment to a second last added title without refreshing the page and it's SLOW. I cannot remove title without refreshing the page and it's SLOW. I cannot add a title of short film without additional search of title ID and it's SLOW. I cannot add a foreign title for sure without additional search of title ID and it's SLOW. The button SAVE LIST ORDER gone from the bottom of edit page and its SLOWING my work. Etc. etc.etc.

It's very unprofessional to do something without a proper testing. [angry]

Why do sites feel the need to drastically change features that their users have come to love. The Lists feature was my favorite thing about IMDb. These new changes are absolutely horrible. They are now cluttered with information I don't want to see (ie. Watch Now on Amazon Video).

What happened to the Compact View? Less is more sometimes! People don't always want to see all the information of the movie in a list. We can do that ourselves by looking up the movie page.

I do yearly lists of my favorite 30 movies of the year and change the rankings constantly. That was so easy to do with the drag and drop feature. Now I need to manually type in numbers for multiple movies just to change the rankings? I hate this so much.

Bottom line is now the Lists are just cluttered and hard to use. What use to be my favorite thing about the site is now infuriating. I am so disappointed with these changes and I know I'm not in the minority here. What were you guys thinking?

I can't add "Zero for Conduct (1933)" to my list because it does not show up in search.

Karen,

It is no longer possible to export another user's list. This is important for reviewing problems with potential candidates for polls when formatting problems occur.

The creation date for a list is no longer available. Knowing this is important to ensure that poll suggestions do not languish.

Karen,

According to:
What kind of text formatting can I use in my list descriptions?
https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/what-kind-of-text-formatting-can-i-use-in-my-list...#

We support formatting using [Square Brackets].

  • [i]italic[/i]
  • [b]bold[/b]
  • [spoiler]Spoilers[/spoiler] (What are spoilers?)
  • [quote]Quotations[/quote]
  • [link]http://www.imdb.com/[/link]
  • [link=http://www.imdb.com/]IMDb[/link]
  • [link=nm2106835]Link to Cynthia Lea's name page[/link]
  • [link=tt0093832]Link to Red's Dream title page[/link]
= = =

Please restore text formatting to change the color of the text:
[white]white text[/white]
[red]red text[/red]
[blue]blue text[/blue]
[green]green text[/green]
[yellow]yellow text[/yellow]
[purple]purple text[/purple]
[black]black text[/black]

= = =

Please restore text formatting for a user's name. Prior to the update of list functionality this formatting worked properly: [link=ur0127678]

Previously it produced this text: dan_dassow
With this link: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur0127678/

Currently this text is produced: ur0127678
With the invalid link: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls062992205/ur0127678

= = =

Please restore text formatting for a company's name. Prior to the update of list functionality this formatting worked properly: [link=co0040620]

Previously it produced this text: Castle RockEntertainment

Currently this text is produced: co0040620

Fortunate, the link is correct:

Bring back compact view. Why remove it anyway? What harm did it do? Senseless change for changes sake.

Add my rating to exported lists. A most needed feature.

They don't even answer to the fact that with the changes on the lists there is no way to see a list with an accurate IMDb rating order anymore. The movies with the same rating number are appearing in popularity order, a fact that ruins the meaning of sorting a list in IMDb rating order and misleads the users who will think that they are seeing an accurate rating order. Why don't you ruin the alphabetical order too? All the movies beggining with A will appear in popularity order and so on, so on...

I don't even know why I'm here. I just like complaining I guess. Plus, I've never really had a conversation with other list-makers before so it's kinda cool to talk to people with a similar niche hobby.

I'm personally invested in my list but not in IMDb as a platform. When it stops being able to fulfill my needs, I'll walk without looking back.

As of yesterday, the RSS feed for lists seems to be broken.  I suspect this "upgrade" also removed that functionality.  Previously, this link (http://rss.imdb.com/user/ur81218372/watchlist?sort=date_added%2Cdesc&view=detail) would return an rss feed.  Now it returns the normal html version of the watchlist.

Not cool.  Please fix ASAP!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled RSS url for watchlist no longer returns RSS feed.

@bderoes: You're doing god's work, my friend. IMDb should be paying you. Thanks for replicating my own bug with >=1000 item lists and for formally demonstrating the errant behaviour of the ordering system.

I'm personally not going to update my list until the reordering is fixed. At the very least "fixed" in the sense that its behaviour is perceptibly deterministic. All this undefined behaviour is making me nervous. I'm worried that there's the potential for overwriting or accidental deletion, especially with these odd numbers appearing all over the place. The first time the "2 of 2 pages" glitch appeared, I was freaking out about the possibility of everything else having been lost somehow.

Letterboxd actually looks pretty awesome for list-making. I'm sure I'll find some things I don't like about it when I get down to really using it but I'm definitely making a copy of my list over there. They even have rankings for list popularity, which I always wanted on IMDb.

I don't know about the future of my list on IMDb but Letterboxd looks like a fine potential replacement for anyone who's interested.

Never mind. After further exploration, the community seems a bit too "millennial" for my liking. By which I mean they make me want to do terrible things to myself.

Any site where this is a top-rated review is not a site I want to be a part of:
doctor: you have two hours to liv—
me: [pushing dvd drive closed]
doctor: wait,
me: [clicks “commentary with the cast” ON]
