Updates to List Pages
Today (Dec 6) we are announcing an update to the List pages on the IMDb desktop experience. This update is part of the broader site changes announced recently (https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/upcoming-changes-to-several-imdb-features-du6man1opd5q0). After in-depth discussion and examination, we have decided to simplify the features and functionality for lists. We have merged “compact view” and list editing into a single Edit experience. In that one view, you can now modify your text and add, copy, delete and move items. We have also pulled List actions (edit, export, settings) together into a 1-click menu (the 3 vertical dots on the top right of the page). You will now also find two new options in the Refine menu: ‘In Theaters’ and ‘Keywords.’ Tech constraints on the new system prohibit us from continuing to support drag-and-drop from the Edit view; we appreciate your understanding. For more information about Lists, see the IMDb Help Center.

I have a list of 91 titles that I want clustered by vague concepts that I don't want to try to name.
So I exported the list to a spreadsheet, cut/paste into the clusters, assigned new position numbers, and tried to move them.
I started with the cluster that was supposed to end the list. Here was the intended mapping:
1 >> 79
3 >> 80
5 >> 81
17 >> 82
23 >> 83
28 >> 84
33 >> 85
34 >> 86
52 >> 87
53 >> 88
72 >> 89
78 >> 90
89 >> 91
I entered these all at once, and double checked my entries before hitting Save Ordered List.
Here was the result (I left in the intended numbers for comparison):
1 >> 79 >>> 68
3 >> 80 >>> 70
5 >> 81 >>> 72
17 >> 82 >>> 74
23 >> 83 >>> 76
28 >> 84 >>> 78
33 >> 85 >>> 80
34 >> 86 >>> 82
52 >> 87 >>> 84
53 >> 88 >>> 86
72 >> 89 >>> 61
78 >> 90 >>> 66
89 >> 91 >>> 85
I was moving 11 items; the first title is off by 11, the second by 10, the third by 9, etc. until title 72. I can sort of imagine what happened to the first 8 (they each lost a slot by their own movement.). But the last 3? No clue. And I have a degree in Computer Science from long ago.
I'm sure that if I had assigned these 11 positions 92-103 they would have landed fine. But that wouldn't help me with the next cluster up.
I'm going to export the list, match the new positions to my titles, and try to move a cluster to the top of the list instead. I'll report back with the results. HOPEFULLY, because the new position is supposed to "insert before the current holder of this position", moving up will work better than moving down.

It's very unprofessional to do something without a proper testing. [angry]

What happened to the Compact View? Less is more sometimes! People don't always want to see all the information of the movie in a list. We can do that ourselves by looking up the movie page.
I do yearly lists of my favorite 30 movies of the year and change the rankings constantly. That was so easy to do with the drag and drop feature. Now I need to manually type in numbers for multiple movies just to change the rankings? I hate this so much.
Bottom line is now the Lists are just cluttered and hard to use. What use to be my favorite thing about the site is now infuriating. I am so disappointed with these changes and I know I'm not in the minority here. What were you guys thinking?

It is no longer possible to export another user's list. This is important for reviewing problems with potential candidates for polls when formatting problems occur.
The creation date for a list is no longer available. Knowing this is important to ensure that poll suggestions do not languish.

I'm personally invested in my list but not in IMDb as a platform. When it stops being able to fulfill my needs, I'll walk without looking back.

the RSS feed for lists seems to be broken. I suspect this recent "upgrade" removed this functionality. Previously, this link (http://rss.imdb.com/user/ur81218372/watchlist?sort=date_added%2Cdesc&view=detail) would return an rss feed. Now it returns the normal html version of the watchlist.
Not cool. Please fix ASAP!

I'm personally not going to update my list until the reordering is fixed. At the very least "fixed" in the sense that its behaviour is perceptibly deterministic. All this undefined behaviour is making me nervous. I'm worried that there's the potential for overwriting or accidental deletion, especially with these odd numbers appearing all over the place. The first time the "2 of 2 pages" glitch appeared, I was freaking out about the possibility of everything else having been lost somehow.

Letterboxd actually looks pretty awesome for list-making. I'm sure I'll find some things I don't like about it when I get down to really using it but I'm definitely making a copy of my list over there. They even have rankings for list popularity, which I always wanted on IMDb.
I don't know about the future of my list on IMDb but Letterboxd looks like a fine potential replacement for anyone who's interested.
Never mind. After further exploration, the community seems a bit too "millennial" for my liking. By which I mean they make me want to do terrible things to myself.
Any site where this is a top-rated review is not a site I want to be a part of:
